I sent out a few packages today for which I paid for and printed labels via usps.com.

Dropped them off at the local PO a little while ago, and was told they only scan them in as accepted if you buy the postage from them. They're then scanned upon delivery.

I guess since DC is free if you buy the label I line, I can't really complain, but I'm curious if other folks here have experienced this at their local POs.

Just heard from Grateful1, who seems to have actually read the terms & conditions on the USPS site rather than going straight to an internet BB and crying about it, that this is the way of it with Click 'N Ship.

So if you're mailing something and want a record of it being in the system, it's better to pay for shipping (and 50 cents extra for DC) at the PO.

Thanks Gary!

That was my understanding as well talking with my counter person at the USPS.

Wilkey

They also f'with their own numbers.
If a package is sent to a workplace - that is closed on Sat. - they STILL scan it as being delivered...eventhough it won't go out until the next business day!!! At least that's what happened to me. After the second time I called and found out their 'routine' procedure!!

I suppose that is why it is called a "DELIVERY CONFIRMATION" number and not a tracking number.

I have used the "Click-N-Ship" service routinely since it began, and have most likely shipped a couple hundred parcels, including overseas items, and to date, knock on wood, not one lost parcel in the bunch. :) YMMV

Yup. I was just surprised, because I've shipped quite a few PM parcels with DC from PO's in various towns I've lived in, and they'd always been scanned in. It's a nice way of letting a recipient see that something's entoute.

I don't think you have to worry about them losing a package, but I have noticed that if you want to track something send it UPS or DHL. P.O. doesn't even update the system until it has long since reached you...almost as an afterthought or something!

USPS sucks...
I know from talking with people from other countries that our postal service is not that bad. They just don't offer the level of service that private shipping companies do. The DC is not a tracking number but only confirms that it was delivered. It is an afterthought but by design, not default.

I don't know, but I'm gettin' kinda hot at USPS...I have a few packages that should have arrived by now and online DVD rental that I know should have been here two days ago!

Jimmy, you and I have traded a few packages. Would you rather have Canada Post?? ??? :p

Vortex is exactly right. I love USPS, because I have become so used to our Canadian fuck-up Postal system. I live in Ontario and have driven to Detroit surburbs just to mail packages via USPS.

Let me add in my 2¢.
Several years ago UPS was on of my best customers...that's because that seemed to "misplace" about 20% of my shippments. FedEx...you've got to be crazy or rich to even think about them!

I only use USPS and have never had any problems. There are a few times every year when a package or two will be delayed, but other than that everything works just fine.

I send out sometimes 100 packages a day (talk about a friggan paperwork headache) and I always go right to the Post Office and get my DC slips stamped with the date. Since I tip my Postal workers with some coffee or a cigar every so often so they don't mind seeing me.

Good point, Jim...here recently, I think the Canada Post might be getting some competition. By the way, how the hell RU? Haven't seen around in a while.. :D

If you're DVD online rentals are part of your rent/burn/return routine, and you do it quickly, more than likely it's Netflix focking with you.

They call it "throttling" and it keeps at home movie pirates from getting too many movies per month.

At least I think I read that somewhere :whistling:

USPS has been so far pretty good for me. Though I have been pretty annoyed lately in trying to find the link for "First Class" shipping w/ DC on the web. I had to ship out a few packages recently and delivery time was not essential. I was hoping to pre-print the labels w/ postage pre-paid and could not find the link.
I ran a search on the forum here and found a link but did not work at the time.

Would anyone have a current link for this? (The click and ship site only has links for priority shipping)

Thanks!

Speaking of FedEx, they just got an $8 billion contract extension to literally haul the mail for the USPS. They do Priority Overnight and 2 day packages, as well as international stuff.
