New guy here. Ready to take my shots. THANK YOU SIR, MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!!Did a search and have not seen this posted, but I am real curious on opinions of this.

I was out having a drink with my padre and a few friends. I had a couple of La Gloria Cubanas along (which are way better than any of us are used to smoking). I considered it a pretty nice smoke.

I passed three out and we toasted them up. I noticed my buddy ordered a Makers Mark shot and proceeded to dip his stick and smoke his stoggie. We started a conversation about this. I compared it to ordering a single malt and mixing it with water. He said that is how he enjoyed his cigars. I agreed with him. His preference if that is what he wants to do. I just would not do it with a more expensive cigar.

What do you all think? I guess I can see buying 2nds or buck a sticks and doing this, but if you have a nicer smoke, blended and aged, well prepared, does the dipping take away from what the cigar was meant to be? Sacrilige?

I have some other smokes I will bring this Wednesday and we will both dip away. I need to see what this is all about?

I think it is a waste of a good cigar to dip it.

If he is into that type of cigar. He would be better off buying cigars that are actually flavor infused.

That way you would get the taste thruout the entiire cigar as he smoked it.

I know There is a MAKERS MARK infused cigar. Terrible IMHO.

I dont think i could ever see myself smoking a "dipped" cigar.

People do it. If that is how one enjoys a cigar, it is not against the law...but why bother smoking a good cigar if you are going to mask the taste?

That was my position. I guess we both agreed to disagree.

FYI, he said the La Gloria sucked. I didn't think it was a bad smoke. Maybe he was trying to justify dipping my gift to make his point.

OK, let me get this strait. Do they just dip the tip of the cigar, so the taste is on their lips while they smoke it, or do they actually dip the foot of the cigar? Do they just dip it for a second or so, then remove it and proceed to light it, or do they let it linger in there to soak up whatever they're dipping it in? And then how does affect the ability to light it, and the overall burn? I'm trying real hard to comprehend someone doing this, and it's not working!

I have heard of a few people doing this and just think it is absurd. I agree that if you like it that way then by all means go for it, but why spend the money on a high dollar, relatively I guess, cigar and the alcohol. Just go out and get a few moontrances and light them up. Or better yet, some honey tip phillies blunts... :D

I definately think it masks the flavor the cigar is supposed to have and if you want to experience the cigar for what the maker wanted it to be then do not dip them in anything.

"He said that is how he enjoyed his cigars. "
Well I would just respect his tastes and let him do as he wishes, but I would not pass out expensive smokes to him from now on. Let him dip some special blends or something. Save the money to buy yourself some quality sticks!

Sorry, man. I guess I should have explained it a bit further. It's not something you see everyday.

You had it right with the dip and smoke. He lit his cigar, and then would dip the tip in for a few seconds while talking. Then he'd take a few puffs. Soak. Puff. Drink. Puff. Puff. Belch. Puff. Drink. You get the idea.

The foot never hits the booze. It burns fine, but he put it out without even getting halfway through. My guess it the the tip gets soggy and you can't draw?

I know a lot of the "ol' timers" around here did it, but it was with dry rolled cigars. I was told it "cooled them down and made them sweeter". Why you would waste a LGC is beyond me.

Natedog,

I'm right there with ya, baby. He could have done that with a Grendadier and I would have been fine. I wanted to share a nice cigar with the guy. I guess I felt he really didn't appreciate or know what I offered him. It could have been a Backwoods for all he cared!!

I can see cooling down a real dry lawn brat. I have a few cheaper cigars that I didn't really care for. I'm going to dunk away tomorrow night and see what the hub-bubb is all about.

Cya,

I've heard of people doing this,...never tried it myself.

My brother tried it once by sticking the FOOT in his beverage prior to lighting. Needless to say,...that cigar was a lost cause.

I'm an ol' timer, and I ain't never done it, wouldn't do it and think it's barbaric to even consider it.

Doc.

Yeah, but do you have more than three of your God given teeth. If so, you'd be the classiest in the lot! :p

I can imagine a wet foot ain't going to go to far.

I hate to tell you guys this cuz you'll probably stop replying to my post, but the guy to the other side of me on Wednesdays licks the outside of his entire cigar. Every time, no matter what. That probably goes back to the ol' timers again. Dry as a fart smokes that burned liked a woman possessed?!?!

Now, the LGC I gave him was not in a humidor. I didn't have one at the time. I had just got them from a friend who wanted to split a few. They should not have been dry.

Barbaric! Alrighty then!! It settled. Next Wednesday, Lynchin' HERF in SE Wisconsin. Let me know if you can make it!!

Deep throating a cigar is an entirly diffrent matter. Back in the old days most of us didn't maintain humidors. Cigars got kind of dry. Licking the stick prevented the wrapper from exploding. I sometimes still do this, probably my Alzihimers kicking in.

LMAO... sounds like your brother is a real asshat. :whistling:

My former boss does this everytime. Really irks me, cause he always bums his cigars from me, and he usually gets a PAM or an ISOM of some kind, and then dunks the head into his cheap-ass bourbon. Now, if I know I'm going to see him, I make sure I grab something cheap from the cigarshop beforehand and give THAT to him.

I've read people doing this. IMHO, it's pointless, but again, I've never tried it. I doubt I will though lol.

I'd get a flavored cigar if ya can't handle the real stuff. BTW those new La Gloria Cubanas & Figuardos are mighty stout, if they are new to smoking give them something lighter.

Never tried it, never will.

Like Doc alluded to, dipping cigars used to be somewhat necessary as humidification devices weren't as good as they are today.

I can imagine you'd get some of the flavor of whatever your drinking, but I'd rather smoke my cigar and drink my bourbon rather than the other way around.
