I'd like to get my gf a nice ring, not thousands of dollars but not a couple hundred either. Any tips? I've heard used/antique is the way to go, but would like the advice of the worldly gentlemen of this board before I proceed.

Yours in sport,

Buy here something from here:

Jewelry

then use the left over money to buy yourself some nice cigars :D or maybe some more Anti-freeze :p

Birthstones are a way to go. If you have children their birthstones in a ring. You can't go wrong with a diamond ring , earrings or pendant. Buy something that is quality, though it may cost more up front your wife will be thrilled.

Stay away from impulse buying at the last moment, you end up buying something that you'll regret and may not be what she would want. Take it from a long time veteran of the game of gifts. The expression on her face will say it all! Especially if you choose wrong

Good luck what ever you do!

Been dating my gf for ~6 years and bought her a ring for Christmas. She liked the ring but was depressed it was not an engagement ring. Don't think I'll ever forget her initial reaction. Will not do that again

:sign: :sign: :sign: WTF were you thinking :0 TFF

Before I gave my fiancee here ring I gave here earrings  Same size box and she was pissed.....I had to pull the other box earlier than I anticipated....I was hoping to get a couple of hours in between but after seeing her expression I figured I needed to hurry the process along

LMAO--this is tff!

The trials and tribulations of the dating man!

She knows she is getting a ring. She doens't like gold so it will be plat. or white gold (whatever that is). She also like sapphires and rubies, which is good, cos I can get bigger ones than diamond for the same price, and no matter what they tell you, size DOES count!

Hit the local stores, take her with you. I can't pick at all, and last year, my girlfriend pointed out a ring she thought was "gorgoues!" and I wrote the check. It's kinda a nice way or surprising her, I think. Plus I can't pick out anything.

Good that you know her preferences in stones. I'd suggest a local store rather than a national chain. Also, don't get suckered with a "natural" stone. The man-made are the same material, better color, no (or few) flaws.

"Estate" jewelry can be a good buy, as long as you trust the store you're getting it from to be up-front about flaws, color, etc. (From a long-time jewelry buyer with a VERY knowledgeable wife. :( )

I bought my fiancee a sapphire and diamond ring (white gold) a few years back. I think it ran me about $600.......The stones are our birthstones and they really look nice together

Get her something from Tiffany

The sterling silver starts at a couple of hundred bucks and the white gold will probably start somewhere around five hundred bucks.

My wife LOVES getting stuff from Tiffanys and it translates into more fishing stuff and more cigars for me :D

Scott is right....you can't go wrong with Tiffany's. There stuff may seem alittle pricey but, it's worth it.

The best one that I supprised my wife with was when we were dating. One Christmas I gave her a small ring, 1st year of dating. I wrapped the box then took it to one of the local banks there were sealing items in cans. :D I had them seal the already wrapped ring in a can. She ended up getting two gifts that Christmas, one being the ring and the other being a crappy hand crank can opener. It was funny as hell watching her trying to open the can.

LOL!

Unfortunately she a) wants it to be a surprse and b) lives in Chicago, so I'll be flying solo on this one!

BTW yeah Tiffany's does have some nice stuff, but you gotta go to the store once you narrow it down.

I have always went and bought something that was handmade, locally. There has to be someone in your area that makes jewelry. Because it is hand-made, it is unique. Chicks dig that.

Mine doesn't go for flowers or jewelry. The few times that I did get those things for her when we fere first dating, she about took my head off. She likes more "practical" things. She's frickin' Mahatma Gandhi when it comes to selflessness. She'd prefer something likea vaccuum cleaner or something like that. I have no clue as to what in the world I'm going to get her. I at least have the weekend to drive around aimlessly, before deciding upon a card. I might get her a two hour gift certificate at the local massage place. The gal there has pretty decent rates.

Spa treatment is the way to go Scott. Facial, massage, manicure/pedicure......works every time.

Don't make the same mistake I made last month. I told her to go and get what she liked within reason. I never got her an engagment ring and she has thrown it up in my face for twenty two years. Twenty eight hundred dollars later she had a new ring and I was out of money. ???
