How cold can it get before I get concerned?

35 F or below is too cold. I put the outdoor dogs downstairs when it's too cold outside, then let them back out during the day.

Also I recommend that you put the dog in a crate when you bring it in. Dogs will not "mess" where they sleep. start by walking him every 2 hours. Then 3 or 4. Then 6, and he'll get used to it. Crate training is effective and neither of my outdoor dogs have "messed" in the house, thanks to crate training.

Having a dog living in a dog house in a fenced in area isn't ideal, but acceptable, as long as you deal with the heat and cold. Tying a dog up, is a horrible thing to do.

Mac: You did a great thing rescuing a homeless Cash. We use to have a pit bull bitch and Dolly lived outside in a fenced in dog pen(20'x40') with a wooden dog house. She stayed there through heat and cold except when it got down near freezing and then we put her in a 6'x6' chain link pen in our garage. Cash looks like a great friend!
