Truth be told, the forecasts are PROBABLY pretty accurate on this one. This one has a small chance of hitting the Carolinas but will probably recurve well before that.

1995 was the second most active Atlantic hurricane season on record (after 1933's 21) with 19 named storms, of which 11 were hurricanes, five categorized as major

But be glad you don't live in the Pacific: For comparison, the annual mean occurence of tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific = 31.8 and the max = 44 (that's almost through the alphabet twice!).

The mean total tropical cyclones that reach typhoon strength is 18! That's almost the record max hurricane total in the Atlantic!

And actually, we're right on track with the last couple of years, just ahead of 2001. The biggest difference is that we've seen more US strikes this year than in the last few years.
