Durian Fruit

I have had Durian shakes many times. I really like the flavor but the smell is horrendous. I mean really bad man, like don't have that stuff in your house.

Disgusting!! I have a friend from China who swears by it, but I cannot even be in the same room when he cuts it open. Nasty tastes like half fermented pudding. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Did his Roomba eat one?

That's funny right there. I had them and if you freeze them, they taste like durian ice cream with the smell being muted to almost nothing. Granted I have not tasted one since the early 80's in Bangkok!

Being Asian, its kind of a staple for my family. Smell leaves alot to be desired, taste is umm.... definately an aquired. It has a slight banana thats started to ferment kind of taste.

Anthony Bourdain eats them like candy but Andrew "Bizarre Foods" Zimmern can't even look at them...Tony's the man!

I used to love seeing the signs on the buses when I lived in Singapore.... the usual "No Smoking, No Eating, No Drinking" and then a spikey ball in a red circle with a slash for the "no durian allowed on board" lol

I was in Thai town last week and was told Jack Fruit is another name for Durian. Been wanting to try the stuff for quite sometime... I walked into a Thai bakery and they had Jack Fruit out to sample, so I went for it (thinking it was the same thing as Durian). Smelled nasty, but tasted kind of like a sweet mango/pear with a slight oniony aftertaste. Aside from the smell, it was very tasty. I just did a search for Jack Fruit and am disappointed to learn that it's often confused with Durian, two totally different fruits!

I'm heading to China town (in Los Angeles) in a few weeks and will seek out Durian, as I'm on a mission to take it on. Rest assured I'll post a full review. :D

LOL Rod I wish you luck buddy. I told my friend that Durian smelled AWESOME! She took a whiff and had a funny expression on her face with her tongue sticking out. I thought she was going to do some backflips and cartwheels.

When I was in Thailand we used to toss them in a bucket of ice before opening. It helped but you had to eat quickly before they started to warm up.

Yum! Love them. Just remember, frozen durian is nothing like fresh. Frozen fruit is never good...think frozen strawberries. Really meant to be eaten within 48 hours after falling off the tree. Let it sit longer and the smell becomes overwhelming. Harvest it too soon and the sweetness have not completely developed, oftentimes the meat will be a bit hard and bland. Jackfruit is not the same as durian. Both are spiky, but jackfruit is much bigger, fruit is yellow vs. white, jackfruit flesh is more firm, smell of jackfruit is nowhere as intoxicating, and taste of jackfruit is closer to pear/sweet pineapple cross vs. cream custard for durian. Either you love it or hate it. No middle ground.

I get them every now and then. Any time I'm in Indonesia, I grab a few from street vendors and my go-to grocery store in Washington keeps them in stock in the freezer section. I never thought they smelled that bad, personally.

Incidentally, I don't know what Moki's done to his Roomba but none of mine have the clearance to take on a whole durian. It's like a small, yellow, spikey soccer ball. O.o
