Durian Fruit

aaahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa!

Oh....sorry. ;)

Well, at least you know how efficient the Roomba logic is. A friend of mine works for iRobot...I'm going to have to relate the story to him! Thankfully, I have cats...;)

Good luck in your search. I have smelled the stuff when in the Philippines, if you haven't grown up with it the smell can clear out a room. They refer to it as Monkey's Butt as they say that's about what it smells like. I am pretty sure there are a few places here that sell it if you turn up empty handed.

Who are you?

Anyone ever try it? Experiences? :whistling:

Yes. I have quite a bit of experience with Durian.

First thing is that it is extremely important to get it at the proper ripeness... and ALL of the Durian imported to this country are frozen before being imported. In short, anything you will get here in the USA sucks. Don't bother.

If you happen to go to SE Asia or Taiwan, or the one farm in Hawaii that grows them... it's a very interesting experience.

I was in Thai town last week and was told Jack Fruit is another name for Durian.

No. A Jackfruit is something else entirely... also known as Nanka. Totally different fruit/taste.

Canned durian? I've never seen that but it sounds terrible. I have had jarred jackfruit. Love jackfruit but jarred jackfruit made my stomach crawl a little.

Then I tasted it.

About the only canned/jarred fruit I feel I can tolerate (other than the obligatory peaches) is rambutan. If you haven't heard of it, it's very similar to lychee. Still, there's nothing like ripping open that spiky, hairy red rambutan shell and sucking the juice from around the enclosed "eyeball" (as my son would put it ;) )

No need to go to Chinatown, Rod. They sell the stuff at the Ranch 99 in Arcadia off Duarte and Golden West. They have them out in bins in the grocery section.

Moki - Great review on the Durian, now I'm even more interested in trying it.

Nice! Just down the street from me, plus I can get some more young coconuts while I'm there. http://www.cigarpass.com/forumsipb/index.php?showtopic=41545

I'm going to try and go there this weekend. Thanks for the tip Wes.

Rambutans are good... btw, "rambut" in Malay means "hairy", which makes perfect sense if you've ever seen a Rambutan.

My favorite SE Asian fruit has got to be the Mangostine, though. Good stuff.

Yeah, but they will have been picked young, and frozen for export here. They are not going to taste like a fresh Durian at peak ripeness.

Best analogy I can make is fresh fish vs. frozen... there's just something "off"

Frozen durian is not good. Think frozen strawberry or any other fruit. The flesh of the fruit is just not right after being frozen. The ice crystals that form in the fruit flesh essentially cooks the fruit.

Andrew, next time you're in SE Asia, try some salak/snake fruit. The smaller variety from Bali are the sweetest, while the ones from the island of Java is bigger and has a firmer flesh. Incredibly pleasant aroma similar to the aroma of wild roses. So many delicious fruits in SE Asia. Growing up we had a rambutan tree, durian tree, jackfruit tree, a starfruit tree, and a mango tree (dad loved gardening). The mango was my favorite of the fruit trees we had. It was a type of mango that has a seed/nut the size of your thumb, shaped like tiger's tooth, and about the size of a closed fist. Incredibly sweet, but is great just before it got ripe, when the flesh is still firm with some sourness to it, and eaten with sugar, sweet soy sauce and chili pepper mixture.

So I picked up some durian last night and gave it a try. Actually bought the frozen durian as it was cheaper, plus they were all out of the fresh stuff. When frozen the smell wasn't so bad, kind of reminded me of onions and mangos. After allowing it to thaw out for a bit, it started to smell more potent, kind of like a skunk walked by and took a leak on rotting onions and mangos... No other way to describe it. I took a scoop and tried eating it without smelling it; wasn't all that bad. I was expecting it to taste much worse, however it sure did test my gag reflex... I ate a few bites, and it tasted a little sweet, however the overwhelming rotten onions/mangos/skunk urine notes were quite overwhelming. Once thawed out, the texture is very custard-like. It's definitely an acquired taste...

Needless to say, I won't be buying durian again, however I can now say that I tried it. I'll stick with Jack Fruit. :)
