Ever have that feeling...AGAIN?

I came home from work yesterday evening and started a few chores...tend to the dog, start a load of laundry, fire up the wood stove, etc. When I stepped out back for a load of firewood, I noticed a trail of footprints leading to the back yard. Hmmm...I don't remember walking back there since the last snow...maybe the wife did. Kind of odd, though. Looks like they walked to the end of the house, then turned around and walked back. Hmmmm, again.

So, a little later, the wife comes home but the garage door opener doesn't work, because somehow, the latch is locked. Neither of us tripped it from inside and it can't just trip itself. So the only remaining explanation is that somebody tried the handle from the outside. Great...I caught the prowler bug from Swissy. At least nothing is missing or damaged.

The couple next door weren't so lucky, however. Got a call from the gal later that evening that they'd had a break in during the day. The timing couldn't have been worse. They're in the process of selling their house and moving down to the Kenai area. They'd just emptied the gun safe and packed everything up for a drive down there. The bastards got her jewelry and about 25 firearms. Nothing else. They apparently knew exactly what they wanted. The place wasn't ransacked at all...in fact, there was very little evidence of any search.

Now, the wife and I are considering a security system.

Man...for up in the middle of no where, there sure is alot of stalkers and B&E. In my town down here, ya never hear about it. But then again, probably 90% of the home owners are packing heat. Plus its legal to carry concealed.

Hmm...Security system could be a nice way to sleep at night.

Legal to carry here too- without a permit even. But PetersCreek lives in a more remote area, and it would be easier to do this sort of thing in broad daylight.

That said, Brett- I think a gatling gun on a string tied to the door, with a sign hanging on it saying 'free guns' inside! :laugh:

That sucks, at least for your neighbor. Funny how they knew exactly what, and where, to take something. ?

I'll loan ya Porter for awhile... he's batting 1000 so far for burglar protection! :laugh:

Yeah, funny about that. They'd had some fairly extensive repair work done on the house a few weeks ago. It was done by people they know but the gal said it stuck out in their minds that one guy was brought in to do some work that they didn't know. Could be coincidence...but I've heard that's kind of how a lot of break-ins are cased.

I like the Gatling gun idea but I'd likely get my knickers sued off. I do think I'll be going to the range to punch holes in a few targets, though, and tape 'em in a few windows.

Sad, somebody on another message board(non cigar) said that they had been broken into, had Christmas presents, jewelery, S.S. cards, Dan Marino helmet, ect. stolen from them. Also done very orderly, like it was a properly planned inside job. I don't understand why this garbage always picks up so much during the holidays. Way to ruin your Christmas. :angry2:

You aren't alone in "getting that feeling". In the last week the HyVee grocery and a jewelery store across the street from me were robbed. Both of the robberies were done in broad daylight. Needless to say in my state one can carry in the car without a permit (which I do), and next week I am getting my permit.

I'll bet money it's someone they know - or, at least someone that knew they just emptied out the gun safe. This is just too coincidental to be random; burglers in a house in a remote area would have dumped every drawer in the house. The bad news is now they really need to start talking to everyone that knew what was up inside the house. Something like this happened to friends of ours as they were preparing to move and they found all the stolen items....in one of their "friends" garages.

Man, 25 firearms in the hands of the "bad guys"....damn.

A security system is a good investment. Get the loudest siren you can and make sure there's one inside the house as well. Scare the living s#!t out of them, as it were....

Are folks that hard up for cash for the holidays that they are willing to ruin someone else's? That really sucks, and has me starting to rethink how "safe" we are out in rural countryside.

My brother-in-law just had his 24ft enclosed work trailer stolen. His company's logo is painted on the side and everything, and they live in a town of about 3000. Turns out they were able to follow the tracks in the snow to some loser's house a few blocks away, and that guy and his wife spent the night in jail for grand larceny, DUI, and child abandonment. Simply amazing.
