From the Beginning...

So much of my favorite music comes from the 70's and early 80's including David Bowie, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, U2, ELP (and Young), Traveling Wilburys, ELO, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Boston, Asia, T-Rex, Dire Straits, The Police, Eagles, Zevon, Traffic, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, and many more. Like many, I feel the artistry from those times were much deeper, when the music was more important than the image of the artist. Can you imagine Iggy Pop trying to get on one of these "talent" shows in this day and age?
Oh gosh, Iggy and the Stooges. How about The Clash?

And who could forget early Genesis under Peter Gabriel? Elvis Costello and the Attractions before he became pretentious.

Jethro Tull!

Wilkey

Amen to that. First album of his (My Aim is True), that's The News serving as his band...as in Huey Lewis and the...fresh from their departure as Clover. Love early Elvis Costello...up through, roughly, Trust, Almost Blue, Punch the Clock....speaking of which, Punch The Clock was produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, who used to produce Madness, another one of my faves from the Two-Tone days. In light of that, Punch the Clock has an absolutely stellar sound.

Hi Wilkey, EL&P are just awesome and From the Beginning is about the best. I always thought of them as "orchesteral". Nothing like it today. I would have never believed that the '70s music would be playing as much as it is today. But that just shows how great the music really was. Other favorites:
Neil Young, Jethro Tull, Chicago, James Tayor--on and on.

I gotta give you credit MC, not many would know of, let alone list Camel. If you ever see almost anything on the French "Egg" label from the 70's-80's it will be progressive. Heldon, Patrick Vian, Tim Blake, Michel Magne or Electric Sun all were on Egg at that time. There was also a very "Yes" sounding band called Starcastle around for awhile too here in the US.

....Camel, Gentle Giant, Captain Beefheart and Zappa are some others.

I saw Emerson, Lake, and Palmer live in '72 during the "Brain Salad Surgery" tour. It was a show I'll never forget....just fantastic.

They are one of my all time favorite 70's bands, to be sure.

Regards - B.B.S.

Saw them at "Superbowl of Rock" at Soldier Field, Chicago in '74 or '75 (memory is going). Fantastic concert as well!! Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer - three of the greatest, no doubt...

I love their take on Mussorky's "Pictures at an Exhibition"....

I remember Starcastle well. They used to catch so much slack because they were labelled a "Yes" rip-off. Regardless, great musicianship.

I'm very sure I have two or three Camel albums in the "archive" at home......

Before engineering school, I did equipment maintenance work for an AOR (album oriented rock) FM station in my old hometown. They couldn't "hire" me, but I loved doing it and they liked having me around. The program director and I got to be very good friends so he'd give me an armload of LP's every week as compensation. I have some gems stored away....and since I was into audiophile quality turntables at the time, they are in pristine condition..... I keep thinking I should catalog the lot and put the collection on EBay or something like that....what a chore.

Cheers - B.B.S.

Any Doors fans ever heard Whiskey and Mystics and Men?

Awesome song for that proper frame of mind!
