Anyone into growing their own chili peppers? I used to grow them a while ago, and just recently got back into it. Right now I have Sante Fe, NM hot chili's and Thai chili's that I'm growing. I'd like to get some Jalapeno's going as well. Anyone have any Jalapeno seeds they want to get rid of? :)

What's your favorite pepper to grow and why?

I grow my own peppers. I'm trying to figure out the name of them. I'll let you know when I find out. They are 9.5 out of 10 on the hotness scale.

My wife makes salsa out of them.

I can send you some seeds if you want?

Ree

You can pick up seed at your local Lowe's store for real cheap. They may not have them though because they are seasonal. I would call and check if I were you. :)

Very Cool! I have been wanting to grow my own peppers for awhile now. I used to be a pretty hardcore hot sauce junky; one whole shelf of the fridge is used for hot sauce. My wife thinks it is a little overboard. Next year I plan on planting peppers. If anyone has any seeds from peppers they like, I would love to give them a shot, especially a good Habañero, Scotch Bonnet, Conga, Cayenne, or Jalepeño. I don't think the growing season for peppers starts until around April here though. I think I will head to the farmer's market next Saturday, and if I run across some good Jalapeño seeds I will send some to you, Rod.

You said you were going to start pickeling; do you have any harvested pepper pics?

Thanks,
- C

The wife grows chilis out in the garden, so many that we give 75% away. We get our seeds from Lowes and they seem to do just fine even here in PA..

Yup sure do, as a matter of fact I just got done bringing mine in for the winter. Next year they should start givign fruit much earlier. I will be keeping them under 40 watt cool bulbs for the winter.

As for the types I am unsure. I will add them when I get home.

I have grown dozens of varieties of chili peppers, for culinary use and decorative applications. Some of the culinary varieties I would suggest:

Aji Limon
Caribbean Red
Criolla Sella
Elephant Trunk
Habanero
Jalapeno
Mexican Negro
Mulato Isleno
Scotch Bonnet
Sante Fe Grande
Serrano
Tabasco

Rod, if you would like further information or suggestions for optimal chili pepper gardening in your region, let me know.

That's sweet to volunteer some of your wife's salsa for the herf coming up Ree  :sign:

I used to keep a veggie garden, but have not the time for it anymore...

I used to grow cayenne, jalapeno, habanero, anaheim, and plain old sweet peppers.

Make sure you allow some of your jalapeno's turn red and then can (pickle) them. It changes the flavor quite a bit, kind of sweet, fruity.

Cayennes are good pickled also.

Habenero's are devils fire. Never again

Mmmmmmmm... habeneeeeeeeros...

Nothing better than smoked, dried, chopped and in moose chili!

'course makes for a fiery, smokey salsa too!
Damn... stating to drool again...

Looks like your 49'ers needed some of that sheet to get them fired up.

Get over it Ree

Make it 2 jars of salsa to bring to the herf, and chips :p

My brother grows chilis and habenaro. Makes a 9 habenero salsa that kicks a**. With home grown tomatoes.

I've been trying to get these chili peppers to grow in my garden for some time now. Maybe it's just not the right climate....any suggestions???

I think you should send them to the Kansas University Ag department for analysis.
It so happens they have an extension office here, so just send it to:

KU Ag Dept
c/o Allen WIsbey
1518 N Cochran St
Hutchinson KS 67501

I'll make sure it is analysed in the proper manner, and get back with you on the results.

:p :p :p
