Classic Van Halen without Michael Anthony is not classic Van Halen. In addition to his bass playing, his vocal harmonies are an integral part of the Van Halen sound.

I've seen the Stones, VH, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Yes, CSNY, the Grateful Dead, Jeff Beck (he rocked!), the Scorps, The Who, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa and a whole bunch of others that I can't remember...

I didn't even know who he was when I agreed to go. He was great. He rocked, he had fun, he came out into the audience and dragged people up on stage, he made fun of them, he had fun with them, they sang, he sang, they played great, they goofed around...he was really entertaining. When it was all over, he offered to met us all in the lobby after a short break and true to his word, he showed up in the lobby after about 5 minutes, signing autographs, talking to folks and accepting donations for his charity to feed the underprivileged....way before that was fashionable.

Goddamit, when you spend 7 hours a day in a sport coat and clip-on tie, believe me, grinding on Tawny Kitaen or her equivalent is what you dream about. And fantasizing about being a sweaty, grinding, man-tart was not just diverting, it was survival when sitting in front of Sister Mary Bonecrusher for the lesson of the day.

Coulda been a man-tart. Shoulda been a man-tart...at least for a little while.

For me, Van Halen will always mean David Lee Roth on lead vocals. Maybe it's because I was in high school in the late '70s and early '80s but DLR-Halen was the soundtrack of my adolescence. "Van Halen" to "1984"...some damn good memories there, and maybe that's what music is about.

I liked VH OK. Not a huge fan but some of their stuff was fantastic.

That said, Wilkey's got a good point. To this day, some of those old songs come on the radio and I am absolutely transported back to my youth. The memories just flood back in. More so with than with many other bands of the time.

They definitely captured that time in history very well.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I like some Montrose and Hagar solo stuff but can't stomach any of his VH offerings. Way too pop commercial. As for Anthony goes it's a shame he won't be there but it won't keep me away. One of my great regrets is I never saw VH with Diamond Dave.
