@Le Primauguet Charlie, can you tell me how to Pronounce Primauguet so I can get pomegranate out of my head when I see your avatar?
Pre-muh-zhay?
I guess its a good time to tell this story. I'll try to be as brief as possible. But I won't.
In short it is a gamer tag.
Though I haven't played in sometime, I'm the much feared "Captain Herve' Primauguet" French privateer in Pirates of the burning sea.
After a real french naval captain
Herve' De Portzmaguer 1470-1512.
I'm a fan of nautical history. Particularly the age of sail.
And a collector of old books.
One of my favorites being "40 Famous ships."
In this book is "Le Cordeliere" and a likely much embellished tale of it's true life Captain. Known to the Brittish as "The Primauguet"
Someone pointed out here, correctly, there was a french Frigate named Le Primauget.
It was named for him. There is now even a class of frigates named for him.
In the book he has just returned from a voyage and as is custom was hosting a party aboard that included many prominent and wealthy guests when a Brittish fleet attacked. With no time to put his guests ashore he engaged the enemy and fought to the death. Blocking the entrance to the harbor and buying time for the other ships in port to assemble a defense.
Called the battle of Saint Mathieu. It is possibly the first naval battle to use cannon fired through ports.
A french poem written after the battle said our brave, and apparently five handed captain, "fought indiscriminately with four weapons and a shield."
As he went down with his ship he was heard to say "My shroud may be deep. But not alone I'll sleep."
Which seems rather miraculous since his and the British flag vessel "Regent" simultaneously went up in a huge explosion.
But isn't that much more exciting than
"Hey yall. I'm Charlie Bearden?"
