I don't know if I'm the first BOTL to get hit by the economy, but I just got laid off today. Any of you Pittsburgh Brothers have any leads, please contact me. My background is electrical engineering, computers, and QA/QC, Military, I'm looking for anything right now. I'll be checking in periodically, but not all day. And sorry to say, unable to make any more purchases - John - your check is good!!!

Thanks in advance if you can help!

~ Tony

Edit to add - forgot to mention I worked with Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University for 10 years at the Robotics Institute.

Well that just sucks! Stay positive, Tony. I'm sure you'll find something soon enough.

That is horrible to hear. Hope you find a job soon and a better job at that.
Sounds like you are smart and shouldn't have a problem finding another job.

I'm in the same boat Tony. I've been laid off for the past 7 weeks. Hopefully all the permit problems will be resolved soon. They are guessing we might start back Nov. 17. When we get back to work we will be so far behind that we will probably work 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week. This schedule might last for 8 months to a year. WOO HOO!!!! Can you say CHA-CHING????

I am sorry to hear it my brothers! It does suck. I'm trying to stay positive but having it happen on a Friday and having to wait until Monday before you can do anything about it is frustrating. I need to cal any & all contacts etc...hit up head hunters, news papers...fun fun fun!!! My company just eliminated positions, so I doubt theres any going back. However i don't know how they're gonna get anything done, there were only 3 of us in my department, supervisors myself and another guy, me being low on the pole...no doubt who was going. Hopefully on to better things!

Good luck and take care! i can't wait until I can buy cigars again!!!! :)

Tough break for you, have you tried the PA Careerlink website? It lists all the jobs in PA, many which aren't even in the local newspapers, very helpful ... link is here

https://www.cwds.state.pa.us/cwdsonline/Par...bOrderList.aspx

you can do searches based on how much you want per hour, your county and even by your skills/trades, I've used it before and applied for a few jobs, not a bad website at all.

Hope your find something good.

All the best,

Nick

CareerLink is definitely a resource. Just be prepared for some on-line frustration with the site (used to work in one in my previous assignment). Will you be able to access CMU's career office for assistance? They should have one. Your resume is up to date, right?

They're giving you two weeks notice plus unemployment, correct?

I was fired for 10 months a couple of years ago. I ended up with a very good position so sometimes, while tough to take when it happens, the grass can be greener so het the ground running and go hard, something good will happen.

Resume is up to date. Don't really want to go back to CMU - I emailed 20 people at the Engineering dept at Pitt today, and submitted 20 resumes on Monster as well. Tomorrow I'm calling all my contacts to see if anyone has anything, even just to hold me over. I've done tons of electrical contracting on my own in the past, just gotta find the work...

Thanks!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, including networking on CP and anywhere else you can. If CMU is like most other schools, they'll have a Career Counseling office that should be able to help with your job search anywhere. It shouldn't just be limited to the school. Are you willing to consider relocating, should it come to that? Are you in a position in your life where you're able/willing to consider that option?

I definitely recommend flooding the market with your resume and a well written cover letter, and then repeating the process every six months or so.

Your local CareerLink should be able to tell you if any retraining or on-the-job-training programs are currently available. Funding for these programs are hit-and-miss, but the current fiscal year just started in July. Unfortunately I'm no longer in that field, so I can't give you any up to date information at the moment. I can do some checking with my contacts and let you know in a day or two.

Just approach the job search as if it were a job itself and don't give up.

The best way to look at it is that job-hunting is now your job: the 8 hours a day that you would be working is now working for yourself, whether it's emailing old contacts or applying for jobs or looking to your (former) competitors for work. (You might want to go back to CMU, not to work there, but because your old managers and colleagues will be able to recommend you other places. After all, track record counts.)

When I was waiting for my work permit to come through was the roughest on me, because I let myself slide - no working without a work permit, no leaving the country (since I didn't have advance parole either), and no money coming in. It took a while to pick things back up and restore my self-discipline. My best advice is to get dressed for work and keep the exact same schedule - don't let yourself slide like I did!

Well - no job yet - but I had to appky for unemployment - I hate feeling like a mooch, but I had no choice. Their payout will cover my bills thats the good new, but I will be limited with everything else. However if I do come acros a good deal at the right price in the forums - I will be back in the game! Smoke on!

Thanks everyone for your support and all suggestions!
