High gloss or natural oiled look?

Seems almost every humidor made over seas is a high gloss. Do any of you prefer a hand rubbed finish. This meaning somewhat of a shine but more natural look to the woods?
 
It depends on what kind of High Gloss finish you're talking about. If you mean the kind the comes out of a can, then hell no.
If you mean a proper high gloss finish,that's hand rubbed with successive degrees of abrasives, then it can be very nice, with a great deal of depth. I think some are confusing oil finish with hand rubbed, which can give you varying degrees of gloss.

A french rub will give you a beautiful gloss but shellac can be very sensitive to moisture. Using rotten stone and pumice stone to get a finish can really look fantastic. You can use these abrasives on lacquer and get a great durable finish as well. I personally like about 6 coats of Tung oil followed by a paste wax to make it feel like silk and still have a very natural look to the wood. It will also create a nice contrast in the figured woods as well.

Doesn't tung oil smell bad? Or am I thinking of something else?
 
Not too bad and once it's cured the smell goes away completely. When I build a Humi, I don't install the Spanish Cedar until the oil has completely cured. :thumbs:
 
Used to think that the piano finish was nice. I guess after seeing some work done w/ that finish, it really seemed to conceil the character of the wood. Even sometimes would be too distracting.
