I've got a case of humi-view-fixation. I can't stop opening my humi to smell and look at my cigars. Anyone have any advice on what to do? :D Really though, how bad is it if I open my humi up for say 10-15 seconds everyday about 5-10 times a day? It is a 40-50 count humi mind you. Will my gars dry out that quickly? Will I be okay with my "bad" habit? :whistling:

Get some damn self control! I did that for a while, like a day.... Just learn to leave them alone they aren't going anywhere.

I don't know if it will do anything but my hunch is that it would!

Do a search on this site for some cigar porn. There's some pretty good ones out there.

Maybe that'll get you your fix for a few hours, lol.

Go visit your local B&M and spend a couple hours in their walk-in! You will be fine. The other trick is to smoke one!

It's really not that big of a problem, so if you want to admire your cigars, go ahead. Just don't leave the top open for too long. A properly seasoned, properly humidified humidor with no leaks will come back to its stasis humidity level quickly (I'd say in under 5 minutes). Your cigars will be fine.

And I know exactly how you feel, for a week or so I was convinced the smell of my cigars was god sent.

mysh,

A 50-count is a small humi so having it open for an average of 90 seconds total each day probably would not be an issue. However, if those 90 seconds were distributed over 5-10 episodes, you'd effectively be knocking the humidity down as it was starting to recover again.

The upside is that being a small humi, an effective and efficient humidification element would recharge humidity into the airspace quickly.

The downside is that you'd have to pay special attention to making sure that the humidification element (sponge, Humipuck or beads) does not get depleted from the constant demand for moisture. No doubt you'd have to recharge more frequently.

I guess the bottom line is this. If you take precautions to make sure your humidifier is up to snuff and these are sticks you expect to smoke in the near term (1 month or so) then the pattern of sniffing you described above should not be injurious.

Your longer term storage would benefit from more undisturbed conditions though. So if you haven't bought a cooler yet, you might as well go check out the $15 48qt Colemans at KMart.

Wilkey

Note: One more thing, mysh. If you think the smell from your humi is intoxicating, you ain't sniffed nothing yet. Just wait until you get your first lungful from a cooler stuffed with Havanas that has rested untouched for a few weeks. Just make sure you're wearing loose pants when you do this fir the first time. :D

It's something we all go through in the early stages. You will outgrow it in time. For some, it takes a day, for others a little longer. Patience, my friend... patience.

I only open my everyday smoke humi about 3 times a day, and that is to grab one to smoke. I used to open up my big cabinet humi several times a day, to change this I put the keys for it in my bedroom. That way if I want to open it I have to walk to our room, get the keys, walk back and open it up, then close it and put the keys back in the bedroom. Generally I am far too lazy for this, so I haven't opened it in a couple weeks. This works out good because this is the humi I use primarily for aging anyway.

This is a very common fixation for the first initiated or those who buy new hummis. Shouldn't be a big problem to overcome just reach into the hummi and pull out of the cigars send them to my attention! LOL Addy on file ;)

Take a picture after everytime you fill it up.

Than blow it up to the size of your humidor top.
Tape the picture to the lid and now you can see what the inside looks like without having to open it up.. Problem solved..LOL!! :sign:
