My wife called me yesterday to let me know that one of my best friends was in the hospital, she thought he had had a heart attack.
I had to excuse myself from the meeting I was in the middle of and run to the hospital. I arrived too late. My friend Steve Theilen had passed away. He was only 47 years old...I'm 45. Really makes you start to rethink your life a bit.
The ER doctor that took care of him said that there was nothing they could do for him as he came in DOA, they shocked him several times and then had to make the call.
Steve has been divorced for 15 years and has three daughters (two of them made it to the hospital around 8 pm last night) we waited there for them to show up and to do our best to comfort them.
Steve's girlfriend (12 years and they were going strong) Cynthia was all by herself when I arrived, my wife came in right after me. Damned it was a tough evening.
I'm not going to be arund for a few day so that I can help take care of the fureral arrangements. He'll be buried in Springfield. IL next to his grandfather on Wednesday.
