If your thinking of a Vinotemp

Ok I feel like an idiot. I am thinking of asking for a wine fridge for christmas, but want to make sure I get the right one. I thought there was a how-to for setting up a wine-o-dor like there was for the cool-i-dor, but I can't find it now. I thought it was a sticky?

Can someone point me to a thread that covers what I need to know before purchasing and also how to set it up.

TIA

Dennis

And this setup guide

Those should get you started.

The above (and a lot more) were found with a 2 minute search. There's a lot more information in MANY MANY other vinotemp threads. You'll have to poke around a bit sometimes, sometimes great information isn't apparent by just reading a thread title :).

Like all of us. Your mileage may vary. Not all of us have Vinotemps (I do) Haier also makes some decent coolers and a few members have those.

Cliff Notes Version.

1. Buy larger than you need
2. Once purchased, Get rid of the plastic smell with Baking Soda and by keeping the door open (don't have it plugged in if the door is open)
3. Invest in some adjustable Hygrometers. Calibrate them.
4. Invest in several pounds of Heartfelt beads 65% rh
5. If you're lookign for some designer shelving, contact some of the reputable CP members. Mtmouse made mine as well as several others
6. Look at circulating the air if necessary with some fans (or you can distribute your beads throughout to try and maintain evenly distributed humidity) Everyone has their own preference.
7. Season it and make sure it's stable. PLUG THE DRAIN HOLE so moisture doesn't escape. Do not proceed until properly seasoned
8. Fill with Cigars
9. Smoke Cigars
10. If 8 is not applicable for certain selections then proceed to 10.
11. Age your cigars

If you're looking for examples. There are COUNTLESS pics of people's setups. You'll see that each one is different in his/her own way.

Good luck. Be sure to post pics when you finish.

Thanks. I had read most of the other threads. I had two questions that I couldn't remember/find answers to.

1. Getting Rid of the Smell- Looks like you answered that question (assuming the baking soda is the only method I need to use)
2. Does the cooling type of the fridge matter. (i.e. does it have to be thermo electric, or can I use one with condenser.)

Dennis

Edit for spelling.

Condensers have been used in the past but it's not optimal as they suck moisture out. Thermo-electric is the safer way to go..not to mention quieter.

It's all mentioned in the past threads.

Thanks. I thought I remembered reading that somewhere, but couldn't find where I had read it.

Fuggin Ordinary Guy? :D

Well...could be. I was referring to "Fuggin Odd Guy" :)

With a lot of new members coming around, including myself, I thought this might help some people out. We all ask about humidor size and one of the first answers that come up is go BIGGER. But how many people really take that in to account? I personally started with a 50 count. Why would I need more room than that, right. Wrong. Well bigger for me was going to a 300 count, which was out grown in a couple weeks .
Well if you hang around here long enough you may come to two options: Coolerador or a Wine cooler. Since I went with a 28 bottle Vinotemp, that's all I can comment on. (If someone with a nice coolerador wants to post pics of their prize possession please do so.
The Vinotemp has been perfect for me, $149, climate controlled with Heartfelt beads. I have about a dozen boxes in it and about 200 loose sticks. I have a setup with 3 custom drawers and 2 shelves. These were built by Mtmouse. He did a great job. After 4 months here my vinotemp is almost full, my 300 count( full holding maybe 150) is full and my 50 is quarter full. I feel I fall some where in the middle of out BOTL as far as what I have. Some guys have a lot more some have significantly less.
If your looking for a nice setup, I say go Vinotemp. Trust us all, when we say go bigger..... Go much bigger. I hope this helps out some of you guys that are on the fence.
Here's some Humidor porn:

The only thing not full

I had been thinking that I needed more storage. My cooledor is full and was thinking of setting up another one. I think this may be a better route to go. Got someone checking into to Target closeouts for me and already emailed the BOTL for pricing on the shelves.

I've been reading about the vinotemp on these boards and others, seems like a great way to go. I found a link on ebay if anyone is interested in a good deal on one, it's the 24 bottle size and I believe it's directly from vinotemp. They are damaged units, but factory tested to make sure they work properly, more information is in the ebay posting.

That one looks like a compressor style, not thermoelectric. Remember the compressor style coolers will make it hard to keep the humidity level up.
