Do you think it's okay for a retailer to post on a public BB such as this one something to the effect of:

"Thanks (your name here) for the order. I see that you ordered a box of (the specific box of cigars you purchased from them, i.e. 'Padron 1926 #6')"

Personally, I don't think this is a good idea unless the purchaser decided to make a public record of his purchases, then a "Thanks for your order" is probably apporpriate. But, what if the purchaser bought the cigars as a GIFT? What if the purchaser likes to keep his purchases and what he has in his humidor a PRIVATE matter?

It's a private matter and should not be there for everyone to see. Allthough I don't see the point in making it public.

I agree with you here. If you made the purchase public, like posting "PM sent" in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum, then it seems you have declared public acknowledgement is acceptable. Otherwise, what I do with my money is between me, the other party, my bank, and probably the IRS.

Just my $.02.

I pretty much agree with the private matter but I added the "Yes, BUT...." option (#2) because there are times when a board member posts acknowledging the fact that he or she purchased cigars from a certain vendor. Something like "I bought one of (insert name of retailer here)'s five pack specials a while back and was very pleased! "

Now in this case because the purchaser chose to publicly acknowledge the transaction, therefore IMO there is nothing wrong with the retailer following up with a "Thank you for your business!"

If the buyer posted that he purchased, then yes a thank you might be in order. Still the vendor shouldn't post what you bought. If you post a "PM sent", in my opinion it's not enough for the vendor to post you bought from him.

I say No. It is up to me whether or not I want to share my score. I get enough of the Look at Me crap with my cigar porn posts so now I just keep things a little more private.

To put it in the words of the immortal Lady Day, "It aint't nobodys buisness but my own".

Doc.

It is only the person's place to tell what they bought and where and maybe what price. I find it in bad taste for a retailer or wholeseller to go to a BB and post about a transaction without asking the person involved. Just my opinion but I do work in a smoke shop on the weekends and what someone buys is for them to tell and not me, I just sell it to them

That's why financial records are private. It is up to the buyer only to say what he did or did not buy and how much he paid.

The following is my opinion and is not based on any specific legal understanding. I would classify it under "reasonable man."

Discretion is king.

The seller's responsibility is complete discretion. The only circumstance where seller may reveal a deal has been consummated (and only by a simple "Thanks for your business" post) is if the buyer publicly acknowledges it first. And even so, he should never reveal the product or the terms as buyers making contact for the advertised special may order other items and in so doing, potentially trigger different terms. What trumps this is any verbal or written agreement between the buyer and seller as to what can or cannot be disclosed.

The buyer's responsibility to discretion is less demanding since the advertised offer reveals the terms. if the buyer is able to secure more favorable terms for whatever reason, then it would not be in his best interest to make that known. The customer is king and his wishes should be respected.

That said, special circumstances may make certain actions necessary.

....nuff said.

If the purchaser doesn't mind the disclosure, no harm done. But - it should be totally his decision.

In my opinion, even if you post "PM sent" the vendor should still not post anything specific regarding your order. Saying "Thanks for you order" is fine, saying "Thanks for ordering the box of Padron #6 Maduros" is not. "PM sent" does not necessarily imply purchase.

A transaction between a vendor and customer is private. It is no one else's business.

If the buyer makes it public, so be it, that's his/her business.

I think any "thank you"s on the part of the vendor should be made via private communicaions, but I wouldn't necessarily be upset at seeing it publicly. Sometimes, however, the vendor's identity can identify what was purchased and in that case I think discretion is the better choice.

Just my opinion, but I would not do business with any vendor I saw disclosing the sale and details of that sale in a public manner without the buyer's permission. That's just bad business in my book.

Exactly...... If a vendor posted on a public forum the merchandise that I purchased from him.... I would be pissed.... and never do business with him again...

I just had a vendor contact me and ask me to and asked me to fill out a feedback post for his website.... that's OK... it still gives me the option
