Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

I heard his rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on some TV show (can't remember which). I liked it so much I bought it on iTunes. Haven't heard any of his other music.

He's great. Somewhere around here I have all of his stuff, along with the stuff he did with Makaha Sons prior to going solo. His passing was absolutely tragic and an event/National day of mourning, that will always be remembered in Hawaii. A truly beautiful soul...his music is amazing.

Iz was a big man with a big heart and a beautiful voice.

Yes he was, his music will live on. His rendition of over the rainbow is used in many movies, tv shows and commercials.

But people should hear the rest of his work that are just as beautiful plus all the native Hawaiian music.

bruddah IZ!

that version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is really popular nowdays.

I hear it on so many movies and advertisements.

Great that his music is getting more exposure.

Great stuff!

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

I was introduced to this man's music over the past weekend.
What wonderful music.

Reminds me of the Aaron Neville.

Iz IS great... his soul lives on in the music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have, good outdoor herfing tunes! I first heard his music when I lived in Hawaii and I couldn't agree more with MiamaiCubano's comments.

I have to say that the first time I heard his music was the Over the Rainbow on 50 First Dates. It really fit the movie.

Israel's great, he made it to our wedding CD.
He's huge in Hawaii, he's got a good wikipedia article here that's worth reading here

If you're into the ukelele Jake Shimabukuro is pretty incredible with that thing too

Enjoy,
Rob

He was from Hawaii and had a career as a suma wrestler. He was very famous in Japan because of that. His native home, music, and language was very important to him. He used the Hawaiin language in many of his songs. They say when he passed it was like a national day of mourning in the state. He died young due to the health issues associated with over weight, which he was as a suma wrestler. He was a great musician with a terrific ability to interpret songs. He is sorely missed by many who knew him.

He's the shit. Tremendously huge dude with a great voice. All his stuff is pretty mellow, and his voice is tranquil.

First heard him on our honeymoon on the Big Island. Went right out and bought every CD I could find.
There are many fine Hawai'ian musicians but his voice is truly special.

I can find no reference to him being a sumo wrestler, he was just a obese man who looked like a sumo wrestler. I think you are confusing him with some of the Hawaiian sumos like Akebono or Konishiki (who also sings).

Nope, he wasn't a Sumo. Wife and I own everything he has ever recorded (that we know of). We've been fans for years. His is great road trip music.
