Just bought my first (SECOND) bottle of scotch.

I came to the kitchen wanting a drink and I had to decide between Vodka/Scotch/Beer/Mixed drink and I honestly didn't even have to think about it, I chose scotch and didn't think twice about it. I am now on my second glass of scotch tonight (fourth overall) and I have to say this is a very enjoyable drink! I have toned down on the water I've been putting in, not because I wanted to see if I could tolerate it, but because I literally wanted to taste it more. The only "downside" is that I've gone through half the bottle in the past few days!

AVB is our drink aficionado hands down.

But my everyday go to scotch drink is Dewar's White Label over ice. Affordable and easy on my cigars. JMO.

smokintexas, not to hijack, but do yourself a favor with red wine: buy French. They never send bad stuff to the states, and you'll quickly learn which regions are to your taste. Bordeauxs only come in a shouldered bottle, and you can get decent stuff for 10-15/bottle. Tomorrow, I'll be at the liquor store, thanks guys!!

Why limit yourself? To only drink French wines, or single malts or Cuban cigars seems to be very limiting. You might be missing something.

Agreed Moe. And I didn't mean 'ONLY EVER BUY BORDEAUX', just simply that it would be a good way to develop your palate, and not enounter anything horrible. Sorry if I came across differently.

No worries bud. I'm so new to all this good stuff that I don't want to exclude anything until I try it first. I'm trying to let taste and experience be my determinants rather than region/country of origin.

I also only have recently started drinking scotch. My first purchase was a bottle of Laphroaig 10yr. It is an islay single malt and is very peaty.

The first time a had a very small amount in a smelling glass (straight) and could not even finish it.

After drinking a little bit each night w/ a cigar I very quickly started to enjoy the taste and smell of the Laphroaig.

I have since had the Glenlivet which you have had and an insanely cheap blended bottle that was like $15.

My favorite would definitely have to be the Laphroig at this point, then the Glenlivet. I could definitely tell the difference between the single malts and the blended cheap bottle. It had no character and just tasted medicinal and had an after taste. I still drank a few glasses though (I usually never drink enough to get buzzed when I drink good single malt scotch.)

So my advice would be to try it straight and definitely pair it up with a cigar a few times and see if your feelings change. I think that if I watered it down it would lose flavor but still have that alcohol taste.

Well, I finished the first bottle I bought about a week ago and I was craving some scotch so I picked up another bottle today. I didn't have the money to spend on a nicer bottle so I picked up a bottle of Chivas Regal 12 yr. I'm sure that some don't like it, but I am enjoying it thus far. I have eliminated the water all together and am drinking it with two cubes of ice. Very tasty!

It's the second largest selling premium blended scotch in the world so there are certainly a fair amount of folks who like it.

Nothing wrong with Chivas. It's a dang good cotch.

I primarily drink bourbon and have tried a ton of them. My Scotch experiences are somewhat limited due to pricing on some of the finer stuff. I have to admit though that Chivas aint to bad for the price. I do however like Walker better as far as blends go.

Scotch is one of those things that creeps up on you. I dont know anyone who actually liked the taste of scotch the first time they had it but its just something about it that makes you go back to it for some reason and then it just grows on you.

I have never been into Scotch, but I was at Costco today and remembering this thread I saw that they had Glenlivet 12 y/o so I picked up a bottle. It's nice with a couple small ice cubes. It's a shame I'm seeing a lady friend soon or I'd have a cigar with it....no wait, that's not a shame at all, that's what I call a good excuse for not having the cigar ;)

Don't the escorts normally have a no kissing policy?

But on a serious note I hate you all, after reading this you have me considering scotch now. Hopefully I have the willpower to not spend the money I don't want to and can last through the end of the year before I give in.

This placed is such a horrible influence.

You should not be disappointed it is a good light beginners scotch, as a matter of fact it was my first single malt I ever had. I still enjoy it occasionally when I am in the mood for something light or when I am introducing someone to the fine world of adult beverages!!

Welcome to CP. If you would take a moment to introduce yourself in the appropriate forum I'm sure more will welcome you into the fold.
