I'm looking at buying my son (3yr old) a mini ATV this Christmas.

My wife wants to get him a power wheels 4 wheeler that costs about $230 and only goes 2.5 - 5 mph. I'm not feeling that at all. If I'm going to spend $250 then I'm going to get something that runs on gas, or at least a 2 stroke.

I'm willing to spend up to and around $400. Just looking to see if anyone out there knows anything about 49cc ATVs and has any recommendations.

Thanks for any help.

It may not be much help, but I had one of those 49cc 2-stroke pocket bikes

Much too fast and too much for a 3yr old (IMHO). An ATV is a bit of a different story, but a 49cc engine can be a lot to handle. I would actually not recommend these until kids are like 10-11 yrs old.

As far as the quality of them. They vary, but most of them will crap out and difficult to pull start. Get the electronic starter, but they aren't very reliable either. They are cheap chinese built machines, inspect the hell out of it. I've seen them with stripped bolts, cracks in the frames, etc.

Just to add, mine went like 40mph when I would ride it

Boy, Wyatt, I'm not sure I'd buy a 49cc wheeler for a 3 year old. I know everyone is different and it's totally your decision so that's all I'll say about it. :)

I've had Honda, Yamaha, and Polaris ATVs. They were all good machines. I'm not sure if those would fit into your budget, however. Maybe the "off brands" you find at hardware and tool places would be in that range, but I can't speak to their quality.

Good luck and be safe (of course you will be! :) )

We bought this last year and the kiddos love it. It has a 12volt battery, which will pretty much run over anything in it's way:

I'm with Brandon and Alan Wyatt. I'm not so sure that any type of ATV would be suitable for any child under five or six. Well, maybe Brandon didn't say anything toward the negative, but what he posted would be a little more in line with the age of your child. I do agree with you in that it is a lot of money to spend for something that they will grow out of very quickly though.

I wouldn't suggest this either, stick with the battery operated. They are not high quality and by the time the child has the responsibility to operate it, they would need a bigger bike. They have a ton of these for sale around here.

Yeah I hear ya, we start pretty early around here though, hehe. My nephew just turned 5 and has been competitively racing 50cc motocross for a year now, hehe.

I know some of the 49cc's come with a speed limiter, was hoping to find one like that. Surely wouldn't want my 3 yr old going 30mph on one.

Maybe I'll just have to shelve the idea for another year or so and fork out the dough for the power wheels version.

What the other guys said, battery power for a 3 year old. When he gets bigger, I know where they sell surplus HumVees :whistling:

I agree with the suggestions above, but I probably wouldn't heed their advice either. :D

As for which to get, I don't know about getting anything for $400. The Suzuki Quadsport LTZ50 is really nice, but it's quite a bit more than you're looking to spend. Like many others, it's got a screw-in throttle limiter that'll slow it down to about 2 or 3 miles per hour. You then have the luxury of giving him more speed as he and his abilities grow. One thing that's important, though. Never adjust the throttle limiter around a child. I've heard of kids learning how to do it and opening it up when the parents aren't looking.

That's exactly what I was looking to find, I appreciate the info, however it looks like it's quite a bit out of my price range, hehe.

Good to know though. Thanks.

There you go! It will get him at least used to riding a 4 wheeler, even though it's not really one. If it has a 12volt battery, like I said earlier, it will pretty much run over anything and especially over grass.

I think that is a good choice. I looked at a couple of the sites I have gone to in the past and found one that fit into your price range of $400, the GS-704E Pocket Quad, from Extreme Scooters. It is probably too much machine anyway even though you do start'em early in Southern Ill. It comes with a governor that works for you too!

In the end it was a good choice you made.

I bought my son a Honda 50 (two wheels) for Christmas when he was 3. Looking back it was probably a mistake, he rode it a few times, it was too much for him, after a few crashes he didn't like to ride it anymore and was scared of it until he was about 6 when all his friends wanted to ride it all the time. He just never got into riding like myself. I hope I didn't ruin it for him when he was young.
I think the Power Wheels quad is pretty cool and I probably would go that way if I had it to do over. By the way, Josh is now in his second year in College and doing just fine.

Get him a Helmet now so he can get used to it

That's a good idea, plus he'll think it's cooler if he gets to wear one of those racing helmets like his cousin, hehe.

Definitely! Gear him up, make it as fun as you possibly can. Heck, put a number plate on it and go all out if he wants. :)

I think you made a wise choice. You'll likely get more time out of the Power Wheels toy than one of those el cheapo wheelers anyway. Those things are pretty darn tough.

As a kid, I had a semi-racing kart with a mac 2 stroke on it, I was a young teen of prob 14-15 and let my nephew of around 11-12 ride it in my parents front yard. He wasn't the most reactive person, but anyway to make a long story short, he drove it under a 3 wire barb wire fence, just barely missed his throat/head and took out a couple trees before hitting the base of our house. Anything that needs a certain amount of finesse should be very carefully monitored until they get really good at riding it. Can't be too careful ya know.
