So, regarldess of what you think of him, there is no doubt that there is entertainment value to Kimbo Slice. A bare-knuckle back yard brawler from Florida, he is trying to break into MMA. I recently read an interview with him, and I must say that he seems to be an honorable, decent man (from what I can glean from the interview on touchgloves.com) I was not expecting that. Now, his "fights" have no ground, no submissions, and I think no chokes allowed, usually, so MMA will be tough for him. He seems to recognize that and is willing to give it a go. His first fight, though, I do not think this will be a problem. there will probably be other problems, seeing that he will make his sanctioned MMA debut against former world champion boxer Ray Mercer at Cage Fury Fighting Championship 5, to be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 23, 2007.

So, anyone else at least morbidly fascinated by this?
I gotta admit, I like watching strikers do their thing in MMA competitions. I also like watching pro boxing, but not quite as much. I'll be in L.A. again on the 23rd, so I won't be able to watch or attend.
 
He is one big dude...I hope he does well in his MMA pursuit, should be entertaining to see him transition from street brawler to professional MMA guy. I have a feeling though, a ground and pound guy will give him a serious whipping. Only time will tell.

There is movie on the web where he fought a lower ranked amatuer MMA guy(Sean Gannon ex boston PD guy who trained in MMA).
Lets just say he didnt fare to well.
Alot of ppl in his krew kept trying to break it up when it was not going Kimbo's way.

So against top ranked MMA guys he will not fare to well.
Unless he becomes a superior grappler/submission person.
We all know he has the striking down!!

No doubt about it. A big heavyweight with BJJ experience could hurt him. Any heavyweight with UFC experience would be a real challange without the "rules" of his normal fights.
 
The guy is still massive and a beater. I'm gonna guess he is gonna get whipped in his first couple fights. Then either leave MMA or maybe get some serious training. I'd like to see him fight a real rounded fighter. Someone with alot of strong low-line kicks and ground work I think would punish him.
 
Everyone has a punchers chance but I don’t think he’s going to fare well in any of the big mma organizations until he becomes more well rounded. It'd be to easy to get a kick KO on him.

If Crocop can get kick KO'd like that, imagine a non MMA trained striker!
Kick KO, submsissions, he has many ways to lose against a big and trained fighter, and only one way to win. I like you that said a "punchers" chance, not "strikers." I don't know if that was intentional, but it sure is accurate. I striker has knees, feet, elbows, etc. A puncher, well, is a bare-knuckle boxer in a cage.

Heh your not the only one who study s mma, anyhow if your a good puncher is easy to develop elbows. The next easiest thing for them to learn is clinch fighting, the knee's ect. But hes probably screwed on the ground.

Didn't mean to imply that I was! I probably woud have called it a "strikers chance" just not thinking. the thought of that beast having me in a clinch makes my a-hole pucker!

I wish it was a little LESS easy to develop elbows. I cut a training partner the other night working choke defenses from the rear, face to the wall. Broke the choke, came around with an elbow that I was going to pull, but he lost footing when I broke the choke and fell into it. Fortunately he is WAY tougher than me and shrugged it off.
 
Can he pound? Yes. But he's going to face a hell of an uphill battle when it comes time to face anyone professionally or seriously trained in the world of MMA/Vale Tudo. It's a long road from backyard brawls to that world.

That too...a professional boxer is coming from a venue Kimbo isn't used to either. In that scenario, both combatants will face challenges, but Ray Mercer has some advantages over Kimbo. First, Ray Mercer is definitely long in the tooth. He's what? 45, 46 now? Got to be somewhere around there. Second, Ray Mercer's career history is questionable as well. He's suffered losses to most of his seriously qualified opponents (Holmes, Holyfield, Lewis, Ferguson) and even lost to paper-thin-skinned boys like Klitchsko. His wins have been largely over journeymen and fighters that are looking to make it big, not against accomplished fighters. His last boxing loss to Briggs was something I witnessed first hand too.

Now, having said all that, Mercer has at least been in the MMA/Vale Tudo world for the last three years or so, even if most of his bouts have ended in losses. Kimbo doesn't have that experience and, when fighting an MMA opponent and losing, only cries foul and "unfair" (i.e., his fight with Gannon). Plus, Mercer does know how to actually fight and box, rather than guard porno-mavens and get kicked off the Bucs.

I'd love to see that fight too.
I can't agree with you more, I've seen a ton of 'big vs little guy' fights, and most of the time a few kicks to the knee make a huge difference. The point I was trying to make is that it's not impossible. I only brought up Sapp since he's such a monster and somehow able to hold his own most of the time. See, size doesn't matter! (yuk yuk)
 
Wow. Submission via strikes, with Royce Gracie as his trainer. He'll be fun to watch, too.
Did you see the fight? Is it available on-line anywhere?
