One of the local shops up here that I frequent has been the subject of harassment by the state for awhile now. The city imposed a smoking ban, so the shop went to a private club business model to allow members to smoke on the premisis. The city did not like that and has called the state on the shop.

The chief investigator for the state has tried to get the private lockers opened ("hell no" is the phrase he was met with), conficated the alcohol that was stored on premisis by one of the owners (which has since been returned) and has been a general pain in the side of the shop and anyone who happens to be in the place when he shows up. The jerk wanted to look inside my travel humi when I happened to be there during one of his visits. Told him he could if I could look at his wallet at the same time.

Today they came in and demanded to see the tax records for the shop. The owner told him that he had given him that information twice already and told him to leave and contact his lawyer. The state dudes then pulled out a warrant and took the computers from the shop, basically shutting down the business as all memeber records and inventory are on the hard drives.

Seems that someone is on a mission to shut down the cigar shops in Anchorage. They will be hard pressed to do so because the shop is a hobby and not a main means of income for the owners of the Tobacco Cache. They will play the games till they win and get their damages from the state. So much for the land of the free.

Wow! That sounds like something out of a bad movie...............One of those "This is too far fetched to be taken true" movies.

Keep us posted on this, I'd really like to hear.

.....look inside my travel humidor? F@#k that.....

Not much they can do other than get a sharp lawyer and go after them. What a load of crap.

Yet another reason for offsite backups of your PC's..... :whistling:

Wishing them the best of luck - B.B.S.

In place of a political diatribe, I'll just say this about what's being done to the shop:

Zig Heil! Learn to goosestep or stand and fight! Investigate the investigators. We all know how those Bullies w/ warrant power have a few skeltons in their closet!!

WOW! That is just crazy.

I guess I better get that gay midget clown porn off my hard drive pronto.

I too would also love an update when you have more information.

I'm glad you didn't let the guy look at your travel humidor. What the heck business is it of his to look at your private personal property? The crap that some people try to get away with never ceases to amaze me.

In a polite way, this is what Jorge Padron communicated to us at the Outlaw last month. We need you guys to get out and start making some noise.

Are the customers of this shop planning anything in support of the owner? A couple hundred people down at City Hall might get someone's attention. Might even make the city paper. Might even piss off people in the neighboring town. Who knows? When do WE the smokers of cigars stop complaining about what everyone else is and isn't doing and start doing something ourselves?

AMEN!!!!

This is very frightening. Does Alaska have a statewide smoking ban? If not, how come the STATE is involved? IT would be a local matter.

But Jorge is right about starting to make noise. No offense but just posting on the Internet don't cut it. We need to be invloved in politics...especially at the local level. Cigar smokers need to go to city council meetings and testify about smoking bans ( get the facts and stick to em.). When Dallas passed its smoking ban I was there, but no other smokers made it in...and out of all the restaurants here only about 4 showed up. Recently in Richardson- a suburb-- lots of smokers showed up and while the city passed a ban, it was way watered down from the original concept and still allows smoking in some bars.

Most state legislatures are up for election this year. Do you know where your representative stands on smoking bans? Does he know your position? IPCPR and others are trying to organize...we need to act too.

Oh ... I am sorry I thought this was the USA! :(

Sounds like something that would happen here in the Republik of Kalifornia. :sign:

I always love the irony of Cali. You can get a prescription for pot, but you can't smoke anywhere  .

Just tell the shop to lock the door and put this doormat outside.
