Well as a few of you already know, I finally have started working on my man cave room. The space is being built in what once was a walkout attic over the garage. My intentions are to someday maybe be able to smoke in this room, if the boss allows it. But as for know it will be a space where I can move all my stuff (liquor, cigars, stereo) into. Space is roughly 200sqft. Here is my progress so far…
I started by having a contractor blow in insulation over garage, then I decked the space with 1 1/8” plywood

I got HVAC in place and all my stereo equipment wires from movie room rerouted, because they were just laid across the floor in attic when I started. Nothing like redoing a bunch of work because you didn’t think about future plans. I need to finish insulated the room and I will be ready for drywall.

I love projects like that!

That looks awesome Aaron!

Wouldn't a walkout attic produce a nasty fall?

It was decked with 1/2" plywood that I had to rip for two reasons. 1) 1/2" plywood isn't going to carry the load for an actual room and 2) I needed to match the height of the subfloor coming from the movie room. Actually three reasons I needed to insulate the floor as well.

I posted this thread, so you guys could see my progress, but any thoughts or ideas would be great for conversation sake.

By "nasty fall", I was thinking along these lines.:)

Aaron,
I love building things and especially a man cave! I hope it turns out perfect for you!

When I finished the basement in my former home, I did a few little tricks that worked out well in the man cave portion. The best one was the beer caves in the wall. Look at the pic below and think of it without the toilet paper holder. I put a recess in the wall every 4 or 5 feet, at slightly above waist level, so that beer would be neatly tucked away and it really helped with spills and lost beers.

You could build a larger recess, with shelves, to store bourbon, etc., it's amazing how much space you can save in a limited area. If you are using 2x4 studs, insert a thin back of your choice, and then add trim like you see below, you will net something around 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" of depth. Just enough for a beer in a coozie or a bottle of bourbon.

Have a blast!

Are you going to put on ventilation before you drywall?
I have wired electrical for ventilation just above room, so that it can be easily added at a later date. All the area above the room is still accessible from the main attic. I also installed electrical for a wall hung air purifier as well.
