McGwire...say it ain't so!

What possible advice could he impart on the Cardinals hitters? "That's a pretty good swing, but if you really want my coaching advice, take steroids."

Steroids or not, I've always said that you have to be a great athlete to be able to hit a 90+ fastball 300+ feet.

What he can impart on the Cardinals, hell if I know. They'd be better off having Pujols just have dual roles.

Not sure I would call that a great athlete Brandon. Does it take a great athlete to hit a 300 yard drive down the middle of the fairway?

The Cards can call him the swing doctor i.e. "Here, take two of these and see me in 4 months"

Maybe. But if that golf ball were coming at them at 90mph it sure would in my opinion. :D

I couldn't consistently hit 90+ fastballs over 300ft, so it must take an exceptional athlete :sign:

I see your side, but still think it takes athletic ability, whether great or not I guess is debatable. I'm not aware of steroids helping with hand/eye coordination. In order to hit 62 HRs, you gotta make contact first.

Now, I guess hitting a 300 yard drive down the middle could be accomplished by an average Joe. Hell, I've seen some older men do it and the only shape they were in was round. The only difference is that the ball isn't moving before you hit it :sign:

I heard his brother has a book coming out soon. That combined with the coaching position is the likely motivation.

Man, if Canseco wasn't such a douchebag he could have been known as the guy who cleaned up MLB. Of course he was involved in making the mess, but still.

I feel sorry for the poor bastard that shelled out three million for the record breaking ball. I was just listening to a local sports talk show on the radio and they said apparently the appraised value of the ball isn't even worth what it cost to make it now.

Roger Maris' record still stands as far as I'm concerned.

Doc.

Agreed...and so does Henry Aaron's.

Hilarious. Their records were, are, and forever will be broken. I bet there are people that still believe that because the season was extended by one game that Ruth still holds that record. I laugh harder at them. The home run king is currently Barry Bonds and will be until someone breaks it.

Some people are traditionalists. Some people collect garbage. You can disagree with me, but I'll be damned if I'll be called hilarious by the likes of you

Doc.

This still makes me laugh:

I thought what you wrote that Maris record still stands was funny. And that collecting garbage was funny too. I mean, three people surpassed 61 home runs in a season.

It was just a matter of time before he admitted it. Wonder why he finally did it? I bet it has something to do with him being the hitting coach for the Cardinals.

You are not kidding. If he were not getting back into baseball he would have stayed silent. I was not the least bit shocked. As much as I hate Jose Canseco he has been totally right and I believe him when he says at that time 75-80% of players were doing the stuff. You can bet that there a ton doing the new one IGF-1 LR3. It is injected right into the muscle and never enters th blood stream. It is a legal peptide that is readily available and cannot be detected. If you do not want to read the whole article I will copy and paste this part.

And here’s the final and most compelling reason why IGF-1 is being used right now, and why the demand for this hormone will increase exponentially as time goes by: IGF-1 is undetectable by both blood and urine testing. Because IGF-1 can be injected directly into the muscle, it never enters the blood stream. Therefore, a muscle biopsy is the only way to determine if a person has used IGF-1. And the anti-doping forces will never, ever be allowed to take muscle biopsies from athletes.

I always get a kick out of this discussion..... :D

Yes the baseball is moving at 90+ MPH, and is wiggling to boot, but when the mark of excellence for baseball is 30% the comparison dies.

When landing the ball "somewhere" in a three acre area will do just fine, the comparison dies further.

The area of a baseball bat which will produce acceptable results is about a square foot, the area of a golf club which will produce acceptable results is less than a square inch.

Yes, the eye hand coordination to hit a moving baseball is impressive, the luck that happens after that is.....well.....luck! Some are better at is than others,,,,,heck, some even approach 40% :D

Are you comparing golf to baseball? The sport whose participants burn less calories than cello players?

Doc.

Here we have a classic strawman argument. In reality the only true statement is the one about the size of the golf head and even that is under valued to achieve a greater effect.

Let's look at the statement one line at a time. "If landing the ball somewhere in a three acre area will do just fine." One needs only to look at the size of an average fairway in golf to see that it is not only larger than any ball park there are no distractions in the primary field of view (ie. basemen, shortstop, pitcher, outfielders, crowds in the bleachers etc). Nor do you have to worry about somebody throwing a sand wedge at you unless you are Tiger under certain circumstances but that is going off topic.

"The area of a baseball bat which will produce acceptable results is about a square foot, the area of a golf club which will produce acceptable results is less than a square inch." While technically correct, the entire surface area of the bat can produce an acceptable result it by no means happens on a frequent basis. Given 100 swings a batter MAY produce an acceptable result one third of the time if he is very, very good. Give any golfer from a weekend duffer to a pro 100 swings and they will produce an acceptable result 80+ % of the time with it being well above 90% for a professional.

Just using that standard of "acceptable result" it is reasonable to say that baseball is more difficult since the desire effect is harder to achieve.

When landing the ball "somewhere" in a three acre area will do just fine, the comparison dies further.

You can't possibly believe this, do you? You believe that Bonds obtained the records fair and square? I guess I'm a traditionalist as well in that I don't like the DH and I almost always get a grin on my face when I see a 3-6-3 double play. Having said that, it will be a cold day in Hell when I recognize Bonds, McGwire and Bonds as the betters of Maris and Ruth. God I sound old. :sign:

That, and he owes the whole Maris family an apology. Remember what a big thing it was for all of them back in 98.

The Maris family? More importantly, McGwire owes an apology to Sammy Sosa, the "true" Home Run King of '98... ;)
