On August 16th, 1977 at about 4PM I was driving on Elvis Presley Blvd in Memphis listening to Rod Stewart's Greatest Hits on the cassette player trying to figure out where all the traffic came from. While EPB was a main street I had neve seen it jammed up like this before. Cars were parked on the sides of the road, people were just standing and staring at Graceland (more then normal) and some were crying. I finally turned on the radio to find out that Elvis had died about 2 hours before.

That was my second run in with things Elvis related, the first was about a year earlier. Graceland butts up against Shelby Park and while in the park and I had broken my alternator belt sometime earlier that day. The park closes at sunset or did at that time so I and my date needed to leave. Only problem was the car wouldn't start. Another driver gave me a jump and off we went towrd one of the smaller exits on a road that went by the back gate of Graceland. As we drove down the road the lights kept getting dimmer and dimmer and finally the car stalled out at the top of the hill about 25 ft past the Graceland gate.

3 guys came out and told me I had to move the car. When it was apparent the car wasn't going anywhere one of the guards called on a walkie talkie to someone inside. We were told to stay in the car and a tow truck would be here soon. Sure enough, about 5 minutes later a truck showed up and took us to a sevice station where the broken belt was discovered. Once the belt was replaced and the battery charged I figured I'd have to redo my budget to cover this. As I went to pay for the services the old guy behind the counter told me there was no need as it had been taken care of. Had to be Elvis.

My mother died Aug 16th, 1977. Every time it rolls around someone will inevitably say that it is the anniversary of Elvis' death and I'll say to myself, "oh yeah, it's the anniversary of my mother's death too'. It's not that it is really sad anymore, just weird to associate the two. I never really think about the day she died until someone mentions Elvis.

I have an interesting story concerning Elvis death Kind of interesting that I remember it . I would have been about 8yo but a few amazing things happened on that day. I used to visit my grandmother in the summer she lived in kimunday IL big time farm country and oil country believe it or not.

when i was visiting i was allowed to run around with a .22 and shoot things rabbits bottles etc was quite normal for the area. On this day me and the neighbor kid had each shot a rabbit my first his dad was so proud of us he let us ride on the running boards of his truck holding onto the window frames also very cool for a 8 yo.

So we get back to his trailer and sneak into his dads room and look at magazines that had boobies in them first time I recall doing this. The only reason I remember this is because his mom came running into the room crying about Elvis dying caught us whipped us then his father came in to see what we were all crying about and whipped us for going through his stuff without asking and when they told my grandparents they whipped me to. Ah the good old days.

Kind of odd... a lady came in the office today to pay her bill, and the TV (on CNN news or something) they were talking about "The King" and she began to tell us that the night her mother went into labor with her. She was rushing into the hospital and a man bumped into her and knocked her down. He helped her up and she (of course in a hurry) headed for the door and thought that it was Elvis. At first she thought she was crazy, and about a hour after her daughter (my policy holder) was born, her husband brought it up. She said I thought that too, but I'm sure it wasn't him. The next day she got a dozen roses, a signed picture, and an apology letter. Then they saw a news broadcast that he'd been in that hospital the night before...

Atleast it's good to know he really was a nice guy. Celebrities today are probably all superficial assholes. :)
