Jesus of Cool, I'm bad, I'm nationwide
On August 16th, 1977 at about 4PM I was driving on Elvis Presley Blvd in Memphis listening to Rod Stewart's Greatest Hits on the cassette player trying to figure out where all the traffic came from. While EPB was a main street I had neve seen it jammed up like this before. Cars were parked on the sides of the road, people were just standing and staring at Graceland (more then normal) and some were crying. I finally turned on the radio to find out that Elvis had died about 2 hours before.
That was my second run in with things Elvis related, the first was about a year earlier. Graceland butts up against Shelby Park and while in the park and I had broken my alternator belt sometime earlier that day. The park closes at sunset or did at that time so I and my date needed to leave. Only problem was the car wouldn't start. Another driver gave me a jump and off we went towrd one of the smaller exits on a road that went by the back gate of Graceland. As we drove down the road the lights kept getting dimmer and dimmer and finally the car stalled out at the top of the hill about 25 ft past the Graceland gate.
3 guys came out and told me I had to move the car. When it was apparent the car wasn't going anywhere one of the guards called on a walkie talkie to someone inside. We were told to stay in the car and a tow truck would be here soon. Sure enough, about 5 minutes later a truck showed up and took us to a sevice station where the broken belt was discovered. Once the belt was replaced and the battery charged I figured I'd have to redo my budget to cover this. As I went to pay for the services the old guy behind the counter told me there was no need as it had been taken care of. Had to be Elvis.
