American Legion post 796 today conducted the annual observance with a dwindling number of members today. at sixty i'm the kid in the crowd, young guys don't join fraternal organizations anymore. it's a pity, but things change. :(

I agree. In fact, young people have little access to or interest in guidance from their elders. Very worrisome. This is how a society grows and matures.

I agree, society grows with advice from the elders. this reminds me of a program i saw on the nature channel about rogue elephants. rogue elephants are just mixed up kids who lost their elders and don't know how to act in society. reminds me a little of what i see on television.

Yes, it's too bad sack, the Legion and VFW posts around me are a dying breed. :( Of course the young punks know everything these days so there's nothing they need to learn from anyone.

I actually went to a ceramony this morning for the first time. A couple of the big wigs from the city were at our neighborhood cookout yesterday and they invited us. Me and my buddy hopped on the bikes and went for an hour. They had 100 flags flying for fallen soldiers, was kinda nice. Also an eye opener when they announced how many men have died over the history of our country fighting for us.

Those fraternal organizations never seem to be trying to recruit members. I get the impression that you have to be invited to join. :(

You don't have to be invited to join the VFW or American Legion. All you need is a DD-214

Doc.

I remember as a kid my Dad (Vietnam Vet x3) was very active in the locat VFW....they did a lot for the community....baseball teams, cubs scouts, etc.

As a younger man (Desert Storm Vet) I joined VFW but seemed to be out of place hanging out with older vets. Not sure why but it's probably like anything else....dependent on the local group.

Back in TX near Ft. Hood there a many VFW Posts. I'm definately going to check them out; however from what I've seen they just play a lot of BINGO.

Anyway, like any other organization you belong to, you have to be a participating member. That's what makes them thrive and appealing to other.

I see local VFWs at the PX a lot patting Soldiers on the back telling the great job they're doing and handing out pamplets. Not sure if they attract members or not. But I'll try it and see.
