Modifying single words

In tryin to modify font, size, color etc. on one word in a reply, I found that the tags didn't close/disappear in the actual post. Also, the codes spilled over onto the next line when I was composing it. And this was only a 3 letter word.
Finally just gave up.
 
Is this what you want to do? The code does spill over to the second line but the result doesn't.
 
Yup. Should have added the detail that the code closures came right to the edge of the window the cursor did not automatically shift to the next line. When I tried to add a 'space' at the end was when part of the code shifted to the next line. When I hit the 'add reply' link what I got was the word changed as I wanted, but with fragments of code still showing.

Also should clarify that I was doing this with Firefox's add-in text modifier rather than the tags the board uses. Maybe THAT
was the problem? :)
