My locals prices are horrible, I hate it...

Colorado is also amongst the worst for taxes and rediculous laws. However, Denver metro has more than a dozen notable B&Ms. There are two that I patronize regularly, but not for the great deals. I can still pick and chose smokes that I've not had before. I'm also sampling pipe tobaccos. I'm attending an Ashton and Stranahan's (whiskey) tasting at one of our new ones today. Cigars on 6th at 4PM, if any other Denver Bro wants to join us.
 
The local shop here is insane, almost $8 for a short story. Was told about another place though, of which I went to today, much better prices and much nicer owners. $5.50 for a short story compared to the previous near $8 price, much better.

So which state has the highest tobacco tax?? Because, TMarquis said short stories we're $8 buckaroos, and BTB bought me one and I think he paid something like $10 PLUS TAX for it...

That's lame, you are getting hosed by your local. His mark up formula is cost X 380%, WTF? The Short Story in a very high rent area with your 70% tax should be at most $7.50-$7.95. Sorry to hear you have a local like that. At MSRP with your excise it should be $6.75.

Thanks for that info. It's mostly cigarettes there so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. They don't even have any accounts with most manufacturers, they go through some kind of distributor. I REALLY wish we had a fair shop to go to up here, but the demand just doesn't exist in this town. :(
 
Hey DK I feel your pain....yea with tobacco tax and our friendly "health fee" (that last part drives Swifty mad if brought up) we do pay way too much for cigars up here. You are always welcome to join us at the Golden Leaf in uptown Mlps. every Thur. nite around 7 pm.(we will be there until the patio opens at Al's Bar then its fresh air, smokes, and drinks) Prices wont be much different, but atleast the guys working behind the counter are happy to have customers and treat our group pretty well.

join the club... AK taxes SUCK. Thank God for internet sales. I buy from the local B&M once and a while just to support them, but damn.... selection and prices are lame.
 
I feel for some of you, I thought i had it bad down here in Texas. All I have to deal with is local B&M's who think they are too good to talk to new customers who are new to this hobby.

I feel for you as high as the taxes are here in California's you can still find short stories between $7-8 a stick. Opus X now thats a different story. The new thing in California is they are trying to tax peoples internet purchases on items shipped into California. They have been doing this for years on anything they can. A friend got a bill from California's state franchise tax board for something like $500 for cigars he purchased out of state. I can't remember his vendor but I never went to there site to purchase once I found it out.
 
Gonz sent me a PM about a shop that is pretty close to my house. He said he wasen't exactly sure about the prices but it is a very nice facility. I am going to have to check it out.

The tobacco taxes stink here in Minnesota, but if we all buy from the nets - we are ensuring that places where we can smoke and congregate go out of business.

I can think of at least 4 great places in the Twin Cities that are worth the trip. Sure they are more expensive than the net, but I make sure I put a bit of coin into the local economy.

My back deck will always be in business. ;)

There are no places up here where you can smoke. Even the shops don't really have a smoking area beyond a couple of chairs. One of the owners frowns on cigar smokers using the 3 chairs he has because it makes the shop "too smoky". Between that and the ridiculous prices I say screw 'em. I'm more appreciated by online shops that I do business with than the cigarette merchants/head shops up here.

Totally agree.

I hate walking into a shop and knowing that I'm being gouged by the unfriendly owner. It's illegal to smoke in any of the shops, or within 25ft of a door/window, so I've come to the conclusion that I couldn't care less if they cease to exist. Some of you guys may have good shops around, with nice owners/employees that you're able to get together at, and smoke with friends/family, but keep in mind there are many of us that don't have any of that. It's frustrating to walk into a shop and see all of the worthwhile cigars with a 50-100% markup, then to try and startup a conversation with the guy, and find out he's nothing more than an ass. What's the draw to keep a place like this in business?
 
Frankly, as a consumer it is your responsibility to voice your opinion with the dollars you spend. If the prices are too high at the B&M - for whatever reason - you (and all of us) should shop elsewhere. If we aren't guided by the invisible hand the market mechanism will fail.

Personally, I don't care how sweet the tobacconist is - I want quality product at good prices - period. :)
 
While I understand your frustration its what we living in Minnesota have to deal with.

I frequent a B&M and have done so for a while primarily for the camaraderie that only people who enjoy a great cigar can appreciate.

Yes, I buy online, yet I don't hesitate to purchase a cigar or two while visiting and not on every visit.

For me its a two way street I need them as much as they need me (especially for 5 months of the year in Minnesota).

I recently attended the Golden Leaf get together in Minneapolis and had a wonderful time with a great group of guys.

Stop on down some Thursday whenever you're free.
