My father and I made purchase of a box of Rocky Patel Original Sungrown and Vegas 5 Gold cigars last week. I'll be able to give them a whirl when I get home around Christmas break, in a couple of weeks. What have you guys heard of the OSG? I'd never even heard of it before seein it on CigarInternational.com and don't see anything about it on RP's website. To add, we've never had the pleasure of smoking a Vegas 5 but have always been turned on by their attractive and colorful bands and box art. What can I expect from Vegas 5? I'm considering buying some of the red and blue singles if I can find them.

I'm a RP fan myself. I like the mild flavors. The OSG is excellent IMO. I've got several and are one of my fav go to sticks. I'd say they're mild to medium with leather, earth, cocoa. Very smooth and delicious! I also really like the 5 Vegas Gold. Another mild to medium smoke with lighter woody...musky? flavors. I think you both will enjoy these smokes a great deal. Well, I certainly hope you enjoy them! You may want to grab a sampler of different smokes before jumping on a whole box. Lots of different samplers out there at decent prices. There's always the CP Newbie sampler!! :D

I'm nor a fan of the Rocky Patel stuff but the Sun Grown has come the closest to not being offensive. I've smoked the 5 Vegas Gold and really didn't care for it. I found it to have a bitterness that just didn't work for me.

I get the regular sun grown in petite corona and they're great, flavorful smokes. I've yet to try the "O" sun grown, but I'm sure they're just as good.

The 5 vegas gold are bleh... didn't care for them at all.

Enjoy!

I like the 5 Vegas Gold for my morning cigar and for golfing. It has good nutty flavors and a hint of sweetness to it.

I'm with you Wilkey. I picked up a sampler of the 5 Vegas Golds and regular line. I found the gold to be really bitter on the finish. I'm letting the rest of them sit for a while and will try again after six months.

Can anyone tell me whether this should make any difference? Price is right on line though, and I'm looking for a nice alternative to Ashtons.

I rather enjoy most RP stuff. I just enjoyed a 1990 "60" as a matter of fact. :) Never had the 5 Vegas stuff except the miami, which IMO was just ok. :) Enjoy the sharing with your father though, as that is far more precious than a cigar!!!!

I have a bunch of RP singles I'm trying to get rid of if you want to try them all... I have a lot of them.

Calling Dave. What's the outlook for the 5Vegas?

Smoked one just now. You're not looking at a major change in flavor, if any. Granted my palate has changed and I now prefer sticks with a bit more kick to them. As far as an Ashton alternative, I'm presuming you are referring to the classic Ashtons, in which case I'll direct your attention to Chateau Real by Drew Estates, RP Connecticuts, and maybe some Indian Tabac stuff. YMMV.

Dave - this is your 1000th post...that is all!

Both of those cigars are too mild for me, the 5 vegas whole line except for the Miami are under par IMHO. The OSG is not as good as the SG, it is much more mild and has hardly any flavor.
