A few light showers that were supposed to be thunderstorms, came through here around 6:00 PM and were over well before 8:00.

So I'm sitting here watching television and my freakin' power goes out at 10:00PM and I look outside and the power company was already taking care of a tree that fell on the lines. I hear the guy say "Well, looks like the power just went out."

What gets me is they've been down this road at least twice this summer and haven't done much in the way of preventive maintenance to trim the trees that are close to the wires.

Where's kevin7? ???

At least the internet still works but I found out the battery for my generator was dead so I had to lug one in from the garage. I had the battery on a trickle charger but the battery is just a little lawn mower battery that is over five years old so I suppose I got as much life out of it as can be expected.

Time for a cigar and scotch! :D

Haha, sorry to hear about this. Glad you were still able to get into chat to have some chit chat with me. Hope you enjoy your gar and scotch!

Good luck CC. Even here in DC the power went out for about 6 hours where I was. There was a thunderstorm and after a big bang in the distance, no power for six hours. The stores that were filled with people had to empty them out and close early. Enjoy the smoke and drink!!

I had one of those great cigar moments during a power outage once. You know what I'm talking about, one of those time where you wonder if the cigar was that good. Or, if the mood was just perfect for the cigar.

Hope you enjoyed your cigar & scotch Bill.

Hey CC86,
Sounds like you live in my neighborhood!

On several occassions which didn't even warrant a brown out, a small rain will fall followed by 5 MPH winds and all of a sudden .... no power. I can't even begin to tell you how annoying it is that last year alone our power went out 15 times (!!!) when there was nary a cause for this to occur. Lately, the road I live on has a cul de sac being built up (with 90 homes due to be completed in the next 6-8 years); with the fact that the power service is questionable at best, work has been done to reroute our power grid to another towns (and away from the faulty power grid we had previously been a part of).

I can feel for ya bro... hope you enjoyed that scotch and cigar!

A tree went down on my power lines last week too. We have a long driveway, long enough that there's a transformer at the top of my driveway near the house, so there's a high tension line run all the way up.

I told 'em to come and cut back the trees last year, but they said "It's fine" and didn't do anything. Fast forward to last week, I'm in bed and I hear a loud "CRACK!" sound... power is out. I see a big tree has yanked the line from the pole. Nice.

I'd actually considered getting a full house transfer generator from http://homepowersystems.net/ -- a very respected company in our area. I didn't end up doing it because of the cost, and because it requires maintenance every year to ensure that it's running properly.

Just didn't want to deal with the hassle, I have enough things to maintain.

The electrical super on my last job has a 10 kW natural gas generator w/ ATS at his house. IMO, that's the ideal setup. Who wants to go outside and mess with a generator when the power outside is nasty enough to knock out some lines? Even then, I'm sure I'd get annoyed with losing power even for <10 seconds...

As I recall, Bill has a nice, propane powered unit, properly wired for transfer (isn't it?) I only have 5KW, a self contained gas powered unit. No transfer switch, but rather a plug in to the switch box. Isolate power, plug 'er in, and I have fridge, swamp cooler (or heater), and enough left for a few lights and other appliances. I have no kids left to plug in a hair dryer or something else stupid. I keep 20 gallons (sta-bil ized), enough for about 3 days of continuous use. I change the oil and clean the plug each August, otherwise just run it half an hour every quarter or so. I've used it twice in 2 years. All told, about $600 invested.

I like to deal with things the same way, there is no crisis that can't be improved with scotch and a good cigar.
