Sonuva bitch.

We needed a hard drive to do photo and document backups so I checked the papers and ended up going to BestBuy to pick up a Western Digital 250GB USB/Firewire drive for $150. Damned if a week later, the 320 GB version didn't go on sale for $120.

Has anyone else experienced electronics gear buyer's remorse?

Wilkey

I walked out of a shop with a Pentium 90 under my arm - a while ago - and said...

"This doesn't feel like $2000.00."

Shortly there after - the 100 and 120 came out.

I've been dealing with this all my life, don't let it bother ya.
Theres a fine line between great tech and a waste of cash, and the remorse makes it worse.
Whatcha using for a backup solution? Is it automated?

No,

Nothing that fancy. I just use it to manually back up our two Macs and to dump family snapshots into. I just have to tell myself that I'm using it and am getting value out of and that makes it all good.

Christ! I hope we are talking way more than a decade ago. If anyone has IT needs let me know. I have tons of crap.

(Definition of crap from what the wife calls the stuff in my office and half of the garage)

Buyers remorse definately sucks but is almost impossible to avoid with any technology purchase. My friends and family have a running joke that I am the worst which is somewhat warranted due to some fabricated story of a coat that I bought which still had the tags on months later. Shop at Sams or Costco as their return policies are the best.

I know what you mean Wilkey. That happens alot to me as well,

BTW, a 500g external at Buy.com for 129. :)

Just my 2 cents, return it. Buy the other...???

Watch the papers and see if the one you bought goes on sale with in 90 days of your purchase, they'll price adjust it for you to the sale price.

I buy virtually all my computer stuff from NewEgg. While not always the cheapest, they are usually very competitive. Doesn't eliminate buyers remorse, but does minimize it somewhat.....

Yeah,

All good advice. I did think about returning it but then it's a schlep to the BB, I had already done two backups, blah, blah, blah. I guess my laziness got the best of me this time. Next time, though...I'm going to return it.

Holy cow,

Ir was your best choice at the time, the best decision you could make. In that situation, know you did the best you could and roll on down the road... unless you have a reciept and they have a libral return policy ;)

To quote one of my college professors, "The technology race is a race we will never win, buy something now, and something better will come out the following week."
Wilkey, this has happened to me numerous times. I bought some Corsair DDR RAM memory, cost me $250 for 1gb at the time, 2 wks later, same memory could be had for 1/2 that. You can't look back, only ahead.
I use Newegg.com pretty much for all my puter stuff, and pricewatch.com is another tech board for comparison shopping. I also frequent anandtech.com for latest tech news, and engaget.com to see what's down the pike.
Try boxing up the smaller drive and returning it, then grab the 320gb drive.

Newegg is the bomb. You always get the goods in no time, the customer service is excellent, and they're competitive.

Pricewatch is also awesome, but ya need to do more footwork, so then it's a question of how much your time is worth. You'll have a few bucks tho.

Here's what I do....

Shop, investigate, research, visit, compare prices, buy or not....then MOVE ON.

Once I buy something, I stop shopping for it. If you wait for the rock bottom price on anything, you'll never buy.

Computers, stereo, electronics, jewelry, cars....for most of us, our daily purchases aren't good investments. They depreciate and often continue to come down in price while we own them (or at least improve while not changing much in price...I've spent about $1500 on my last 3 computers....).

Just my 2 cents...

In fact, I shop the bleeding edge, then I buy last week's model. Shopping the recently obsolete model, wife has gone to fleaBay for our last three <misc digital stuff> and paid about 25% of MSRP, new.

Echo pricewatch.com. I used it to by my 50" plasma TV. Saved $1000, free shipping, and no sales tax from Beach audio......
