It's been a long, long time since I've been "newly" in love. :sign:
Generally, it would all depend on the girl. One I remember...she was a "dancer" at a fine establishment called Sammy's. "Newly in love" definitely was not the tone of that relationship, but I recall going out and buying magnums xl (true dat), duct tape, candles, a 12 volt battery, and the ep of "Closer to God" by NIN (something she would like to play over and over and over). The last I heard from her, she called me from jail stating she had been pinched for "shoplifting" at Parisian (a store much like Macy's or Dillards) in Brookwood Mall. I told her that that was outstanding and hung up.
At about the same time, I met a fine young lady who was the daughter of a former, ultra-conservative, gubernatorial candidate here in FL. Surprisingly, she too wanted to hear "Closer to God" repeatedly, and had a very unexpected tendency to instigate all manner of activity in public places. For her, I bought magnums xl, lingerie and....well, there must have been some other things along the way, but I can't recollect those particulars right now.
Now, when it comes to wives...the price/gift list increases one-hundred fold...and it is continuous.

The year was 1994. Or thereabouts when the Downward Spiral came out. I have a "Closer to God" story as well. Similar to yours. A nightclub, a girl, lots of dancefloor fog. Of course, she was there with her boyfriend, who happened to be the punter for the University football team. Or so I was told. After a half hour of the ole eye games, we bump into each other on the dance floor, with the smoke and with that song in the background.
That was 5 minutes that felt like a lifetime.
It was also a small chapter that turned into a thick book.
Here's to that song brother (ching).

It might be "Closer" on the album, but it's "Closer to God" on the ep/single/b-side. One of a few instances where the remix has a different title than the original, but oh well.
