On This Day, 1929

On this day in 1942 Anne received a diary for her 13th birthday. She named it Kitty. The rest is history. It was required reading in my school and it had a very profound effect on me. It should still be required reading.

On another note, we have a memorial here in Boise dedicated to Anne Frank/Human Rights. It's a powerful piece that reminds me of several of the memorials in DC. You can walk around the various sculptures and stone tablets that have quotes from everyone from Ghandi to Chief Joseph.

The center piece is a statue of Anne herself. Of course several of her quotes also adorn the walls. A week or so ago some jackoff scumbags knocked over the statue, causing several thousand dollars in damage. In an area that struggles as it is with recognizing the need to celebrate human rights leaders, this sickened me. I can only hope the karma gods catch up with them sooner rather than later.

Thank you for sharing this great piece of history Doc. I agree with the importance of reading the book, it quickly went from being a task to very enjoyable reading which has made me appreciate all that I have been blessed with.

A truly sad story. It had a profound effect on me.
We had this book in school as required reading. I am not sure if they still have it now as values seem to have changed since I was a child (or so it seems to me).

Just asked my son (now 21) if it was required reading when he was in school. He answered in the affirmative. Knowing how wimpy public schools have become, his answer kinda surprised me.

I remember reading this in school. This book was the first thing to make me realize what a cruel world we can live in. It also sparked an intrest in reading non-fiction/history type books. As always, thanks Doc.

The story becomes more poignant when one has a daughter that is about her age. It would break my heart to know that my child would have to go through something like that. It is hard to believe that we can be so cruel to each other. I wish I could say history will not repeat itself, but... Thanks Doc.
