I actually just built my first system a couple of weeks agos.

I started with a Raidmax case with a 420W PSU, side panel window, temp gauge.

added:
ABIT MOBO with an Athlon 64 3000 with just a heatsink and fan
Kingston HyperX 1Gig RAM 3200, I think
ATI 9800 PRO 128M graphics card
160 Gig Seagate Barracuda hard drive
A standard combo DVD/CD-ROM, I think 52-32-52*16

Then for the perks:
Microsoft Wireless Elite desktop (keyboard and mouse)
Samsung 17" flat panel monitor with attached DVI cable to the computer
JBL Creature speakers

The whole set-up costs me about $600, so for all you DITYers it defintely pays to build your own computer and it is fairly easy to do.

This system plays Doom III, WOW, and Quake 2 at the highest settings with ease. I also love the wireless mouse and keyboard.

I do mostly co-op play online with a few friends. Got tired of the deathmatch fragging due to a number of cheaters and attitudes from 12 year olds (that could kick my a$$) Due to the number of hacks and cheats people are now using online, I only play on dedicated host games we setup. Even punkpuster games get hacked nowadays it seems.

we use teamspeak to talk and coordinate with each other... anyone ever wants in let me know and I can include your email in the 'game notices' we send out...

..what's worse is I design PC hardware for a living. Can't get away from 'em, it seems.

I'll tell you something else about most pexi cases - they are fragile as eggshells. You'd think they could be tough as hell but the one in that picture is most certanly a "trailer queen" as the street rod guys would say. They just won't put up with much stress; even less once you load it full of hardware, fans, lights, etc. I wore latex gloves while I was working on it so when the UV's came on it wouldn't be one big fingerprint. It really did turn out cool but I'd estimate I've got 40+ hours in that one, fabrication included.

My PC is in a boring old black Antec case....no windows or lights to be found....

Games? My wife got into shooters and we LAN game Unreal Tournament 2004 almost every night after dinner for a couple of "capture the flag" maps. We really have a ball. She also likes the new "Serious Sam 2" game. I play most all the Id games and HL2 as well. Just re-installed "old school" Quake 3 Arena and had a ball working my way through the maps in single player mode. Solitare for nerds, methinks..... :laugh: Never got into RTS games...not enough SHOOTING..!!!

I'm finishing Quake 4 and plan on starting on F.E.A.R. when time permits. Battlefield 2 is my go to game for online fun.

you shoud try the Swat4 for a different twist on the F.P.S. - the object is to NOT kill them, but rather to 'restrain' or 'incapacitate' them. You actually get deducted points for unauthorized use of force, or worse yet, deadly force. My best score so far is -190 points, out of a possibly 100! :laugh: went on a killing rampage after I accidentaly killed a hostage.

It's alot harder than you think... we have a couple of levers we have yet to succeffully complete, and by successful I mean making it out alive! You woudl laugh your butt off with all the Taser shots I've done... :whistling:

pretty cool, but nothing beats sneaking up to someone, and taser'ing them in the a$$!! watching them quiver and shake makes me laugh every damn time I do it! I suck at throwing things in the game, for some reason... I usually blind myself with the flashbangs! The guys I play with don't let me carry much like that anymore... but I'm a damn good shot and when the chips are down, guess who goes in a room first! :thumbs:

Have you DL'ed any of the new levels? One for CO-Op play is a biotch! we still have yet to make it all the way thru alive... called mittleplate alpha or something like that...

I tell you what tho, having live people to play with, and be talking while doing so to really coordinate attacks, makes a HUGE difference. I do alot better when I have a live, thinking human as a partner instead of the brainless bot the computer gives me.

to make matters worse, when the new patch is out soon, you no longer will be able to walk away from someone that has their hands up- theyll reach for anything to kill you with, much lke real life I'd assume.

I'll see if youre online here next time we get a game together... it realy is a blast with 4-5 real people.

if it comes up "Data receiving took too long. Cancelled. Server is down or overloaded. Try again in a few seconds." it means we're not playing. Otherwise you'll see a screen that shows the map we're on, number and names of players and more.

I've got a Tandy 1000RL with 768k ram and a 20mb HD. 16 color display too! Not EGA, but TGA graphics. It's the sheet man!

Oh, forgot to mention the killer 8086 10mhz processor!

I also have a IBM 5150 w 64k ram and a 5mb HD. Monochrome display, clicky keyboard (I wish the still made quality keyboards like that)

it was good.. I'll give it that. Another oldie that I *LOVED* was Descent and Descent II - flight sim, space combat, first person shooter all rolled into one, with AWESOME online play- even allowed saved games with co-op online play!

*sigh*

companies just don't make 'em like they used to- crank them out, patch the bugs once or twice and on to the next blockbuster with no more support for the just released game.
