Since the database is becoming rather large on CP, I'm considering pruning topics in the lobby. That simply means, topics will be automatically deleted after 9 months or so if no one posts to them. Really no point in keeping topics in the lobby for more then a year.

What do you think?

Is there anyway to delete threads that are not accessed within some (6 month) period? Some threads may have valuable information that is accessed through the search engine. In other words, some threads may still be being read but just no longer responded to.

Otherwise, I think it is a good idea to delete threads that are no longer being posted to.

just me

I think you are right Rod  Most topics of interest seem to be recycled in one way or another anyway.

Why do you want to wait 9 months, 6 should be long enough.

I agree with the six months. I know when I joined CP I only read the topics that were posted within a month or two before I joined. We won't have to worry about people not having access good information from past topics if the CP FAQs section works out.

Of course every good topic won't be part of a FAQ so blair's idea about only deleting posts that haven't been read in a while is probably a good idea.

just my two cents

6 months works for me as well. Like I said, we just want to prune the LOBBY, nothing else. The lobby receives hundreds of posts a day, and most of them are regarding current affairs...

I know some other sites never prune their forums, but to keep everything in order and tidy, pruning is a good thing.

Six months seems good. LOL, sometimes I may not want to read what I wrote yesterday let alone 6 months ago :p

I could have sworn I responded to this topic.

Anyways I come down in favor of not pruning ANYTHING.

There are those classic posts that people liek to bump, sometimes you might search a members's posts to see what their preferences are, and of course cigars get discussed in the lobby too.

Part of what makes a great online community is the wealth of information stored, whether it is meaningless snippets or cigar reviews or whatnot.

I owuld like searches to reflect everything ever written on here. As minor as it may seem now you never know down th eroad what you're going to want to access.

Well out of those you mentioned Beast I think the nictine absorption one merits being saved. We are talking about the pahmalogical differences of the patterns of absoption such as ho wlong it takes the substsnce to hit the brain and how long the buzz lasts.

Interesting stuff.

As for the other stuff, I could come up with all kinds of things:

I got tix to the UM/UVA game

then I might come back on and post about how my mother ragged on me all last night then come to find a crime was committed at the stadium and here I am trying to establish an alibi.....

check out this asH:classic link to a guy with a 4" ash on montecristo.

Don't know if any of you hang out at GenMay or not, but over there they have what they call TheVault. It's where all the really good old threads get kept. Of course this is yet more work for admins, but if there is something that comes up that we really want to keep around, we would have a section that holds old closed threads of grrrrrrrrreat importance. Holy run on sentence batman. Time for nap.

Ohhh...I see....duh. I totally forgot the importance of the "nicotine" buzz factor in cigars. Afterall...that's the first thing I look for when reading a cigar review...the buzz factor section. How could I forget. LMAO

I am against any script that deletes anything based on time. There is no way a script can tell the difference between a relevent post or irrelevent post. Granted, %75 of what is posted in the lobby can be linked to current events, %15 is linked to people posting in the wrong forum!?!?!, and the last %10 stuff worthy of keeping. I personally don't believe that the %75 of actual rubbish is worth deleting if it means we lose other great posts. Lets put the moderators to work(that also goes for moving cigar posts from the lobby)
