Puerto Rician cigars

Earlier this year my wife and I took a trip to Puerto Rico. While sight seeing, I came across a few street merchants selling hand rolled cigars, of which I bought a few. I also bought some Don Collins cigars; a bundle of rum and a bundle of vanilla Lonsdale, plus a sampler back. I understand that they may not be the greatest, but I sure enjoyed them.

So I have to ask: How come I never hear of Puerto Rician cigars or tobacco? I've read a couple of books on cigars, and have new subscription to "Cigar Aficionado". I know tobacco comes from Hunduras, Nicarague, Dominican Republic, and other Caribbean countries and islands, and Mexico and Africa, and even Connecticut. Anybody know why Puerto Rico is not a major contributor?

There is a thread or two (not much) that talk about these cigars.
I'm pretty sure I enjoyed the non-flavored stick I got there.
Barely worth it as the price was 10 bucks.

I guess that PR just doesn't grow that much tobacco...

PR cigars exist, but not much of a demand. The tobacco that is grown on the island is used to make El Producto, Dutch Masters and the such.

I buy Don Collins cigars when I get a chance. Not a bad cigar and when you visit the shop you get to taste some rum and coffee. I'll be going in July to smoke a few in the store.
