Bush is calling in military and reserves, my uncle included, to MI and LA to help get out the survivors. Personally I think Bush has waited WAY too long to act on this disaster. My prayers will be with my uncle and the rest of the men and women entering the flood areas over the next couple of weeks. :(

He's sending them to MIchigan? ???

Sorry KB, I couldn't resist.

yeah, definitely a few days overdue. better now than never, i suppose. all my family is in louisiana. luckily none had severe damage to their homes. i have a good friend who lives/lived on st. charlse near loyola that i can't get ahold of because no cell phones work. i'm pretty worried about her. this whole thing has been depressing me quite a bit. getting worse and worse everyday. and its the citizens that are making it worse. its so sad. my thoughts are with the entire city and all who have or shall be helping in any way with the situation.

While it is easy to blame Bush (and there is no question response was slow) I think the Mayor and Governor are more to blame for their slow reaction and confusion. I think nobody realised the magnitude of the situation.

Why blame them? Bush (the president, would be there boss) said "I don't know what to do about this" to a reporter this morning.

Under our federal system, in natural disasters, it's the Governor who's in charge, not the President. All federal resources are to be made available to the states, but the are under the state's control. The Governor is in charge, and during a disaster the POTUS works for him.

I think he is partially responsible. From what I know about bereaucratic protocol (which isn't much)is that the Governor (Sate) has to ask for the help before the feds can get involved. They are screaming for help today but I didn't get that feeling in the beginning. I don't think anyone knows exactly what to do about this situation. It is a sad situation all the way around. Unfortunately, I think anytime politicians get involved their goals get clouded. Our ultimate goal is to save lives no matter what.

Are you a democrat? (Hope to God not!)

Then you wouldn't know how one thinks would you? ;)

And Bush waited to DAMN long to get into the war. Two days after 9/11 he says we are at war, and then a year and half later, we finally send in the troops.

I just think that when a city is under 20 feet of water, it's time for the government to step in.

Previous posts are exactly correct, this was a state and local issue, not a Federal one. We all have 20/20 hindsight now, so of course Bush could've stepped in earlier. Everybody thought New Orleans would be spared the worst when Katrina turned east. It didn't work out that way.

At this point, we need to respond like we would if this was a terrorist attack and marshall every available resource at every level. God help those folks.

No,(And thank god I am not.)

I know how the ones who post on dem underground and the ones who voice their opinions on most froms of media think, I gather a pretty close impression how the ones I observe think, so yes I believe
I do know how they think.

Now now if you will go back and really check your history you will find out we acted much quicker than that to the trade center bombings, iraq wasnt the begining of the war afghanistan was.He didnt go into iraq until he had to jump through all the hoops the liberals made him jump through. But I do agree we waited much too long, he should have immediately attacked Saddam when he fired the first missle at one of our planes,,,oh wait that was under the Clinton administration, nevermind,Well we shouldnt have ever let Saddam off the hook in 91 if you ask me, so yes we waited much too long.

Yes I think the local gov should step in, if they cant handle it the state next, if they cant handle it then the national gov,Wait.....that is the way it played out. There is absolutely no fault to be thrown at anyone, it has gone the way it is supposed to. Nobody could expect what has happened, it is a terrible circumstance and people are hurting now and it helps NOBODY to hurl accusations especially at our president when he is facing many many situations that he never would have expected (and to me very admirably).I am sure he responded immediatly when he was asked for help.Try putting yourself in his shoes before you accuse him of something just because you dont like him. That is just my opinion.

Interesting points made about who is responsible during this situation. I just read an article on Reuters saying that a model predicted that this would happen to the city if a major hurricane hit.

http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle....RITICISM-DC.XML

Good article, makes you wonder why there was so little preparation.

Of course the model showed that this would happen. Let's see, take a river the size and power of the Mississippi and change its course. Kudos to the COE for having the ability to do it, but sooner or later nature's gonna win. On top of that, most of the city is actually built below sea level. Finally, it is right on a lake that is kept from flooding the city on a good day only by a series of levies. Of course it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Now, don't jump on me for being harsh about the entire situation. I feel for everyone that has lost and continues to lose. I was in New Orleans just 3 weeks ago. Many of the places I visited are gone, wiped off the map. I'm sure that some of the people that I met are gone as well. It makes me very sad. It makes me sad to lose that much history. It makes me sad that so many people lost their lives and livelihoods. It makes me sad that the state did not do something sooner. It makes me sad to watch the behavior of many of the people there. It is one of the most tragic things I have ever watched take place.

Wish your Uncle well, and thank him for me for what he's about to do, but the President is not at fault here. Yes, I do agree that the federal government should have stepped in to take charge, but that is hindsight at this point.

The state's politicians and representatives are to blame. Take a look at the senator (the Democrat Mary Landrieu) and how she ignorantly praised the current and former presidents about how great they are instead of forcing the issue of getting immediate federal relief at the beginning of the week instead of ignoring what was going on while she politically positioned herself on national TV and refused to listen to how bad things were from the CNN reporter the other day (Anderson was his first name) while he was trying to convey the lack of any relief. In stark contrast, the Democratic Representative of New Orleans - William Jefferson - came right out and said that the lack or organization and communication was directly to blame for this mess. No phony posturing there.

Pay attention to how the far left will now pull out all of their usual B.S. to blame the right, all the while ignoring or denying the failure of their portion of the Democratic party. Instead of taking action, as usual they will play the blame game. When it comes time to vote, people should remember the actions of those two politicians and realize which one of them needs to lose their job.

(and yes, there are people on both sides of the fence that should be assuming responsibility - not just the left and the far left)

Rob, thanks for the good thoughts about my uncle.

I'm not trying to play the blame game. Bush (along with people on both sides) should had stepped up days ago instead of letting them (LA's officials) do nothing.

But since Demos love to play the blame game, I would like to blame the companies making all this a little harder. Hotels jacking up prices, airports charging my neighbors 1,000 dollars more on each of the two tickets they bought 3 months ago for there cruise, the night before they were to leave.

Instead of the greedy gas companies (and others) trying to gain high profitts right now, they should be giving away as much of there product as needed to help these people. It's over. sorry to turn this thread political.
