Hi,

FYI: FWIW: YMMV

I got married 8 years ago and am getting divorced now.
My wife hated cigars, so they went into storage in our house in Northern
California. (temps 45-90 degsF in the house)

I had 6 (35 gallon size) 3/4 filled cooleradors. They remained closed and
I never added 50/50, nor checked humidity or did anything with them
in 8 years. (I had $ during the dot com boom, not now. :) )

When I checked them, 97% of them had dried out to varying degrees.
Few were smokable as found and some crumbled, but all were bug free!

I thought I had lost them all.

Included were many El Rey Del Mundo, El rico habanos, La Gloria Cubanas,
Consuegras, El Creditos, some XXX, Belindas, 898s, Remedios 95s,
Romeo et Julietas, Padrons, Hoya de Monterey and miscellaneous
others...none for sale, BTW.

So I decided to try to reconstitute - resurrect them. What could I lose?

I removed all ziplock bags and any 'almost empty' boxes.

I refilled my "soap dishs/florist green stuff" caddies and placed 50/50
(polypro~glycol and tap water--yeah, yeah, I know) _soaked_ sponges,
sitting on foil in each coolerador. I left them in there for 2 weeks.

I opened them and resoaked the sponges and green stuff.

Now, one month later, I have revived 70% of my cigars--nicely aged too. :)

I will continue this for another month to see if I can get that last 27%.

Best wishes to all and I hope if you ever find yourself in this sad state that
this info may prove useful.

Note: This was posted solely because I thought folks might want to know
and might find this info useful: no other motive...nor do I think
I'm any sort of expert!--YMMV--so please spare the flames. :)
No sales. I have been and intend to smoke them myself.

Hmmm.... I had a number of dried out cigars - all Padron Anniversary '64s. Bought them that way when I was a n00b, thru Yahoo auctions. Anyways, I tried the same thing, plus some variants - even the apple slice in a ziplock with a cigar.

End story is, they revived.... but they are NOWHERE near as good as the real deal. The oils are (mostly) gone, they burn warmer and faster and do not have the same flavor. These ar enow my 'yard gars' and are almost gone, thank God.

But, better than throwing them away... everyone needs a cigar to smoke while working in the yard.

Six coolidors left for how long? Oh man, that's a punishable crime isn't it?

Sorry to hear about the divorce, that's tough. Been there done that.

Pay attention people. The poster is not getting divorced he is just forwarding a story from someplace else.

It sounds like an interesting exercise. However, from the little that I know, if a cigar is not stored correctly for just 3 consecutive weeks, it will never be the same again.
This is the amount of time it takes to suck out the oils from the tobacco and with the oils goes the flavor. Sure, you will probably be able to restore RH but the foundation of the smokes, certainly after years,
will never be the same. Again, JMHO...Perhaps Prof Wilkey can jump in here :whistling:

Brian.

Glad to see somebody is paying attention 'cause it certainly wasn't me. I flashed that FWIW as just FW and jumped from there. Mea Culpa.

Wow, 6 coolidors in storage without humidification? Dont be surprise if they all taste the same and bland.

Many thanks for the welcomes! :D

The oils! Well, you're right...to a certain extent IMHO. But I am a barabrian (just ask the ex) :whistling:
Some % did burn faster/hotter/less flavorfully..these tended to be the one w/o wrappers or wrapped only in paper. Most are delicious.
I will have to re-educate my pallate to be sure.

But I am enjoying them none the less!

Glad to be back in the mix.!

What you've attempted to do is akin to taking an egg salad sandwich that's been in the glovebox of your car for a few weeks, tossing it in the refrigerator, and once it gets cold enough, considering it ready to eat.

Your cigars will just never be the same after they've been dried out for that long... as was noted above, the essential oils that lend them much of their flavor are simply gone.

Exactly - nicely put.

Have to agree with Moki here, glad you restored your RH to them, seems an awful waste not to at least try to revive them, but as stated by some of the others, once those essential tobacco oils are gone, they cannot be recovered. Hey, I would use them to pass out to your occasional cigar smoking buds on the golf course, better than handing them a dog rocket I would imagine. Welcome to CP, pretty interesting story none the less.
Rob

is anyone having trouble relating to putting 6 coolers of choice smokes into unsupervised storage because of a love that only lasted 8 years?

:) Thanks kids! I guess I can give them to the Swisher crowd.

Unlike egg salad, I don't think these will kill me,

as always, I remain humbled and awed by your assistance in understanding the Truth.

Have a nice day!
