I have the 55" and wouldn't trade it for any other like size on the market.I think it has a crisper picture, better resolution.

Some people have problems with a rainbow effect produced by older DLP's, so look at one n the store. Still, hard to justify a $500 price difference.

The issue with the Plasma/CRT burn in is a good one in regards to gaming (also those stupid graphics that are parked in every corner of every tv show now).

Check the return policy at Costco. I don't think they offer the same options that they used to. LCD projection sets, like the Sony's, tend to have some pixilization when fast action is on the screen and, if you're playing the Xbox, you may have similar issues. DLP has fantastic colors. Burn in on plasma has gotten much better with pixel shifting technology. That's the way I would go.

Though id add a little tid-bit even though this TV is out of the range you requested. If you are a movie buff like me then you may want to consider getting the nicest you can afford. I for one got tired of watching movies on my regular 36 inch Sony. I just bought the 50 inch SXRD. The picture is unreal. HD and movies are truely a new experience all together. When you go to the store compare some of the nicer ones to the less expensive. You might fall in love. In any case some of the TV's talked about so far are quite nice. I like either the Sony or the Samsung, both are great sets.

Update.
Went to Costco today...
Saw a few nice sets...
Samsung 56" DLP hl-p56474c Pics and Stats $2499.99
Panasonic 60" LCD rear proj pt60lcx64c $2599.99 Pics and Stats
Mistubishi 62" DLP wd62525 Pics and Stats $2699.97
Panasonic 52" LCD rear proj pt52lcx15b $1899.99 Stats and Pics

The cheap Panasonic had a nice picture to it. The Samsung looked nice but for a little more the Mitsu or the Pana 60 looked better (but they are ginormous!.
So, I guess I am stuck between the Samsung and Mitsu DLPs right now...
What does everyne think about the Mitsu?
Clearly we got some Samsung lovers here!

When viewing a TV at a store.
REMEMBER: THESE TV"S are set to torch mode.(hi contrast, hi brightness)
They set them this was in order to give an exagerated look to the TV.

What you see in store is not always what you get.

If you are seriously debating over a Tv do the following.

Grab your favorite DVD.
Watch it at home a cple times. Pick out your favorite scenes.
ONes with lots of action (motion on screen) vivid colors and numerous black scenes.

Once you have those picked out go to your local store.
Adn watch those scenes over and over until you are comfortable with the picture quality. I also ask them for the remote so I can set all the levels to a midway point. It is essential you are happy with your proudct especially if you are dropping over 2g's.


I once spent 3 hrs evaluating TV's
I compared a CRT ,DLP 720, DLP 1080P, LCD,D'ILIA. ON different signals.
480P DVD signal, comcast stb 1080I cable signal. and an OTA antenna.

Luckily i went to a store that sold only TV's and they allowed me to do all of this.

a local best buy or circuit city will probally think you are crazy. and try and sell you a bunch oc useless accessories..LOL!!

of all the sets you mentioned I am partial to the
Mistubishi 62" DLP wd62525 Pics and Stats $2699.97.

Had some great black detail . Most DLP's suffer greatly in this department. Weak black color.

Well enjoy.. Nothing funner than shopping for a Tv..

BTW i ended up going with a monster TV..LOL!
Mitsubishi diamond ws-68815 (9" guns) CRT HDTV.
Nothing came close to the PQ and the price was a steal

Try to do a "mini" calibration in the store to get an accurate comparison. Also get a calibration dvd for after you purchase the set - it makes a world of difference.

MOst HT forums i frequent say this is a cool gadget but not worth the price. UNless you have the correct equipment..

BEST BET.
AVIA home essentials calibration DVD. 480P gives you a real good baseline to calibrate this input.
INHD TUNE UP SHOW (FREE) or HDNET TUNE UP SHOW (FREE) Must tivo these necause they are on so early in the am. (1080I or 720P depending on your display) Helpy you get a starting point for your HD input.
And a radio shack decibal meter.
These are the begining steps to properly calibrating your TV set and HT set up.

This makes a world of difference.

And if you can spare the extra hunderd dollards get an ISF calibration specialists. They will set up your TV better than you would ever be able to.

I am getting my CRAIGR calibration later this summer.. I cant wait.!!

Nice, I have the 55". It took me a while to get the picture the way I like it, but it's great. I hate watching TV at other houses now, just not the same.
