So i'm about as newb as they come as far as rum's go. I enjoy a good rum and coke usually captain or some other base bar bottle occasionally.
However, Ive often thought I was missing out on the true nature of fine spirits and was not sure where to go.

I read some on here and looked around online as well and kept hearing about zaya blended rum, so I managed to find it locally earlier today, 34$ after tax for the 750ml.

Now keep in mind i'm not much of a drinker and don't do well with strong tasting spirits or shots for that matter. So I was skeptical and cautious to make the purchase even after showing up at the store and finding it.

Long story and tons of horrible grammar later...... I poured a bit over a single ice cube to take the edge i expected off a bit, and I was surprised to find it much smoother and subtler to my untrained pallet. It will take some time for me to fully appreciate it and catch all the subtle flavors that hide within but definetily one of the best rums I have had to date.

Either way thanks CP brothers for the info that led me here and cheers !

edit: Anyone have any favorite cigar pairs with this ?

I always keep a bottle of this stuff on hand. Great rum!

Zaya's a bit sweet for my tastes, but a beautiful rum nonetheless. I tend more toward Ron Zacapa 23 Solera, and Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva Espiritu de Cuba. Both are a bit spicier, and not quite as sweet. The Matusalem's a bit fruitier on the finish than the Zacapa . . . but any good aged rum is a vast improvement over "mixing rums."

Zaya is a good rum, no doubt, but make no mistake, it is not a pure rum. However, for your first journey in to rum, you couldn't have picked a better one.

If you get a chance, try the El Dorado 12 year old rum. One of my all time favorites is Doorly's XO. It contains rum from 6 to 12 years old. Total Wine has it for less than $15 I believe. A very good bargain.

Doorly's XO is the best sipping rum I have come across for it's price point. I will have to revisit the El Dorado 12.

Zaya is on the sweet side, but delicious. Tasted it at the Texas Cigar Festival and had to get a bottle for home. I can only imagine what kind of trouble I could've gotten into in my twenties if I kept a bottle of that stuff around. I'm new to drinking rum neat myself, so this thread is helpful.

I bought a bottle of Zafra for my next rum experiment.

Ron Zacapa all the way...I prefer the 23, but the more premium XO is fantastic as well. If you go for Cuban Rum, the Legendario is fantastic. Like Zaya, it's not a pure rum, but it's delicious nonetheless. Much better than anything Havana Club offers.

I like HC7, especially with a "sugar" cola. Haven't tried it any other way though.

I have tried to find some of this nearby as well in my quest yesterday, the Ron Zacapa. It seems be 90 mins to 2 hours away for closest bottle. I will try get one next time I am in those areas as I have heard great things! thanks!

Zacapa 23 for sure. The XO is better but unless you can find a good deal, the price point is just a tad too high.

What makes something a "pure rum" versus the Zaya that was mentioned? Just curious...

Since you live in the socialist liquor state of PA you need to put those liquor store people to work. Walk in and say you want a bottle of code # 8147 transferred in. It may take a while since the PLCB is pretty worthless but eventually it will show up. If you really were in a hurry you could pay for UPS shipping but why spend more if you don't have too. Or you could look into mail order and spend about the same even with shipping since PA prices are high to begin with.

What I mean by "pure" rum is that nothing has been added to the spirit. Generally your sweeter rums have different additives, sweeteners, and other flavorings.

Exactly. They use raisins with the Legendario.

Raisins? I thought it was blended with a little muscatel wine

Yup...raisins....
