Sad day for IndyCar Racing

I am a HUGE IndyCar fan. Since they weren't showing the race live here, I set my alarm for 0330 to wake up and check the results. Even before I could click to a sports page, my Yahoo messenger started up, and this was the headlining story on their little news bubble thing. I know that this is a very real possibility in motorsport, but I'm completely stunned and heartbroken by this. So many factors in this add up to make it nothing short of a Hollywood scripted scene. It is disgustingly ironic that the Crapwagon's final victim is the one person who worked almost all season to help make the new car safer for next year...

*EDIT* I think what really bothers me is seeing that picture with his kids from when he won Indy this year. As an adult, his wife understands what happened. I can only imagine how confused those children are not knowing why their father isn't there, anymore.

A truly sad day for all Indy fans, he was due to race down here soon on the Gold Coast with an Aussie driver in a V8 supercar, but now we will miss his talent on the track.Thoughts are with his family and friends.
R.I.P Dan. :(

I was at the race and the crash was unbelievable, we knew there was a problem right away as the Life Flight Heli fired up almost the second the track workers reached the car.

Our hearts go out to not only the Wheldon family but the Indy Car family as well. You can't work that close to someone with out being heartbroken over the outcome.

Sad day indeed.

Very sad indeed! I'm also a long time Indycar fan and like kann I didn't get the live broadcast. Instead I heard about it on the radio Monday morning in Japan. We get so used so seeing guys walk away from a big crash that we sometimes forget just how dangerous it really is. I really enjoyed following Dan's involvement this year, from his on-track races, to the commentary he did with Versus in the weeks following Indy, to the testing he did on the new car, to the 5 million reasons to race at Vegas.

Dan, you are sorely missed. Rest in Peace.
