Hey guys, recently joined and gave a hello in the introduction lobby.

Anyway, I've recently started my cigar smoking journey and wanted some input from the seasoned pros. I started by smoking some Cohibas, Romeo y Julietas, Montecristo and others while in Jamaica. I thought the Ciglo VI was the best of the bunch.

Anyway, now that I'm back in the states I can't get all those. So far, I have tried the following:

- Punch maduros
- Montecristo Churchill
- Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro
- Ciglo torpedo . . . not sure what the name was
- Macanudo maduros

Based on what I've tried, I seem to prefer the maduro wrapper and, so far, I like the taste of the Romeo reserve and Macanudo the best. The natural cigars I've smoked, to me, have a bitter taste. Is that a characteristic of the wrapper?

My only complaint with the Macanudo and the Romeo maduros is that both were a little tight on the draw . . . the Romeo moreso than the Macanudo. Neither made it hard to enjoy it, but they were definitely a little tough.

What I have mostly bought are the robustos. Is there any difference in taste between the different styles, or is it just a matter of preference and length of smoke?

I am about to order some Padrons and Rocky's. Anything else I should try?

Welcome to the wonderful world of cigars! Maduro wrappers are indeed a treat but try not to box yourself in a corner yet. The natural wrapper spectrum can range from really light to really dark. Maduro is not a reference to the color as it is a reference to a process the leave undergoes, which makes it darker and sweeter overall. Many things can make a cigar taste bitter. It can be from things like improper storage to over humidification. Those factors can be kept in control relatively easy if you set up your own humidor. For the most part, blends remain similar in any line. They are sometimes tweaked a little to allow for proper burn etc... I think you are right on with checking out some Padrons. Try some in natural and maduro. The 2000 maduro is a great cigar and was my first box purchase. Good luck!

Dito on the Padrons, newer smokers tend to prefer maduros. Try to branch out a little and develop your pallet.

And a friendly FYI Macanudos are commonly known for quality control flaws.

Best of luck on your new adventure.

Thanks guys. I was all set to order a box of RyJ reserves and Punch Deluxe and now I've just tried the Partagas black label, which I thought was outstanding.

Decisions, decisions . . . LOL!!
