See ya in a few...

My dad just had double knee replacement on Dec. 9. He does the dredded knee machine on both knees every day plus his physical therapy and occupational therapy. He is busy pretty much all the daytime hours.

He is off his narcotic pain meds.

Go with the program and get well emo.

The both orthos said I am a canidate for knee replacement. I had a brief coherent talk with the surgeon after surgery. He said it went great and did the microfracture procedure to regenerate cartilege growth. Hopefully it'll regrow so I wont have to go in for a transplant. Will know more after my visit with him today.

Wow, I didn't have a machine, thank God. I was up and moving shortly after my first 2 (that is why I had to have the second 2.) I had to go into an office and have a pretty blonde physical therapist bend my knee for me.

My dad had the mico thing several years ago. You have youth on your side emo. My dad was in his late sixties when all this knee stuff started. He is seventy one now. He'll be in the hospital until at least New Years.

Brings back memories. They shaved the old cartilege off then drilled 6 holes in the bone to regenerate the cartilage growth about 12 years ago. I was then on the knee-bending machine for 20 hours for the first week, then 16 for the second week, 8 for the 3rd, and finally 4 hours for weeks 4&5. The machine was used to round out the new cartilege so that movement would be smooth. When they did this to my knee, the procedure was still experimental. It was the most painful thing I have had to endure. Thankfully, everything worked as planned and my knee is now painfree, I have a full range of motion and I can now embarass myself in soccer and basketball.

Second most painful thing for me. The first was having a thick syringe put into my knee to drain it.

The doc had good news and bad news for me. Good news was He was able to perform the micro fracture twice on my tibia and 5 times on my femur. The other good news is that all ligaments and tendons are in tip top order.

The bad news is that my lateral cartilege and meniscus was destroyed. If when I had surgery 8 years ago by the Navy, they performed it, I would be in great shape today. But now, he thinks I'll be lucky if the microfracture works. We'll know in 6 months or so where I stand. Pardon the pun. If it works, it buys me 4-6 years before need cartilege/meniscus transplant. If it doesn't, the transplant should go down within a year.

So now I really have to make E-7 and get a desk job within the year. Otherwise the Coast Guard may opt to medically discharge me. That sux!

I want to thank everyone that sent me well wishes and nice comments. Today I went ad had my stitches taken out. I am up and about on a cane right now for short periods of time. For longer treks, I am on the crutches. Still doing the CPM machine and looking to start physical therapy after my next visit in 2 weeks.

Chef Emo......ah I mean Chief Emo. Sorta has a nice ring to it. You have all this time to be studying for the tests and trying to figure out how to protect your Chief's book once you get it.

(I assume you Coasties do a book like the Navy)
