if you have this problem, tell me what you use. working different shifts and long hours is killing me and i'm not much of a pill guy. so, what do you use?

A bottle of booze should do the trick.

LMAO! i do want enjoy a bit of retirement! :p

You are not the only one in that boat. My normal hours are 1900-0300. I'm considered a relief supervisor so I fill in on other shifts as needed. I worked 1600-0000 last night. Tonight I am the 0000-0800 supervisor. My sleep is screwed up too.

I have a script for Ambien...Rarely use that. Try some antihistimines. That usually will work for me and I think it is safer than Ambien.

Another problem I have encountered working weird shifts is weight gain. I am usually too tired to exersise properly so my waist is a problem. Eating truck stop food or fast food in my normal work time fare.

Good luck with your problem.

I would ask your doc for some Restoril. You cannot take with alcohol.
RESTORIL

Other things I try, are avoid caffeine in the afternoon/evening.
Try and eat high tryptophan foods (turkey, milk) before bedtime.

Goodluck.

a bottle is a bit much, but I like a little irish cream and vodka right before I go to bed sometimes.

2 glasses of red wine and vigorous sex helps me sleep. I was in sarges boat situation for a while. The best bet is to limit cafiene and nicotien during the day, and also get your exercise! Even if it is only doing alternate sets of push ups and sit ups. That will help. Also, try a hot shower for 15 minutes, then 15 minutes of stretching. Avoid TV and the computer for at least an hour before bed.

Also, melatoin is very safe for regular use. Doesn't make you tired, but helps you sleep deeper.

Loved Ambien. Lunesta is ok, but not as powerful. Now I am on Tazodone, but it kicks my a$$ so I take 1/2 a 50mg tablet. It does the trick but man I have a hard time shaking it in am.

I had some weird schedule changes and needed something too.
Had scrips fpr temazipam and ambien.
I prefered the temazipam.
Watch that you don't become dependent on any of these things.
A shot of Nyquil might do ya.

I completely forgot about this stuff, I used it for jet lag a couple times. With a double dose, I can fall asleep anytime anywhere, and get some good rest. Never woke up groggy like some other sleep aids make me.

Be careful about which antihistamines you try.

Pseudoephidrine makes me wired, some people it has an opposite effect...

Benedryl (diphinhydramine) usually does the trick for me. It is commonly used in psychiatric wards to help settle the combative types (along with a dose of Haldol).

I take Amitriptyline, it is an old prescription drug (cheap) with many uses (anti depressant is one of the uses), it causes drowsiness and just helps me slow my brain down.

For a while there I too was combating insomnia. Even if for a few days out of a month, it was kicking my arse, which really did no justice to my 5 am wake up call- I went to the DR. and he scripted rozerem which I took for all of two weeks. I went with that choice because it isn't a controlled substance like some of the others. I too am not much of a pill person. I have them on hand just in case I get plagued again.

I can relate with how horrible it feels the next day to not get suficient rest.

Haven't needed to use it in a while, as of late I am out like a light by 11:00.... :whistling:

BTW_ the melatonin does make me groggy in the am. So I tend to prefer the rozarem.

Do what MattR does. Take an old sock to bed with you after looking at BOTLs ol' ladies and masterbate!

I've tried Ambien, Restoril and Sonata.

Restoril is, by far, the strongest of the three and definitely caused the "hard to wake" syndrome.

Ambien was mid-tier and, though it didn't keep me asleep all night (just over 5 hrs) it had no adverse effects either.

Sonata, the weakest of the ones I tried, didn't really make me tired. After I took it, I kinda zoned out - neither feeling sleepy nor paying attention to anything around me. Once I fell asleep, I sleplt nearly 5 hours and woke up fine.

Melatonin has never done a thing for me. I tried it offf-and-on from 99 to 01 then gave up. Got better results from evening workouts about 3 hrs before bedtime. Trust me, even if you are tired and feel sluggish after work, a 15 minute quick workout will do wonders for your sleep.

If I had to suggest something, I would go with the small workouts for daily stuff and talk to your doctor about ambien, but only for days when your circadian rythm will shift 6 hours or more.
