I have been thinking about this for awhile now. Growing up in an extended family where we have lost a couple of members due to cigarette smoking related illnesses I never really considered myself a "smoker" since I never smoked cigarettes, only 'gars.

It seems, to me at least, that when the media or the public talk of smoking or smokers they also refer to cigarettes. Yet in magazines like CA they always talk of legislation regarding smoker's rights that are currently happening.

So I ask you, what is a smoker to you? And are you one? Do you agree with our society that cigarette smokers are really the 'smokers', or do you feel you are another definition?

Thought this might make a good discussion and look forward to hearing your opinions.

good topic. i voted for "Non smoker-I only likes my 'gars". i ask myself this all the time. i was at the dentist the other day and he asked if i was a smoker. i didnt really know how to answer him.

i think of a smoker as smoking a handful a day. i only smoke a handful a week so dont consider myself a "smoker".

just my odd way of justifying it.

I consider myself a non-smoker. Or, more accurately, i define "smoker" as a cigarette smoker. I am a cigar smoker. I know, however that certain females in my life (interestingly, not my fiance, who doesn't like it, but is really reasonable about it) don't make a distinction. Smoking's smoking and it's bad bad bad.

I think "society" places all tobacco using people into the category of smokers. Too many of our rights sure are being taken away.

I consider myself a cigar smoker.

I hate the smell of cigarette's and cant stand to be around them.

But yet I can sit in a room full of cigar smokers all day and not be bothered.

I would all for the smoking ban if it did not include cigars..LOL!

The question is... When do we declare war!

Same here... cigar smoker only.

I can't stand the smell of cigarettes... even to the point of moving tables and whatnot. But I don't make a scene, as they enjoy it like I enjoy my cigars.

However, every time I run across cigar smoke, my head swivels around until I find the person! In Mexico it happened a lot... my wife thought I was swinging my head around to look at the pretty ladies, but I was really looking for who was smoking what cigar! At least that was my story (and I'm sticking to it... :whistling: )

Like a lot of us here, I only smoke cigars.
I ususlly smoke one or two a week.

I don't consider myself a smoker. In the eyes of my wife though, I'm a smoker. She is a reformed smoker. She stopped about 18 years ago and to her all tobacco is bad.
It makes it a little tuff on me, but I figure every husband need to have one or two habits that your wife hates. :p

If someone asks if I smoke, my reply is that I smoke cigars every once in a while, and I let them decided whether to lable me a "smoker" or not. I personally think of a smoker as someone who smokes multiple times per day, more as a habit than just to occasionally enjoy the flavor of a cigar.
I have been known to light up a couple cigarettes to go with my carafe of coffe while pulling an all nighter at IHOP, although I really dont like the smell.

I voted non-smoker. I always say that I am a non-smoker when someone asks.

Besides I do not believe in society. :whistling:

I voted nonsmoker. According to my doctor, that's what I am. He says that a "smoker" is someone who smokes regularly and often. Apparently, my 1-2 cigars a week do not count in his eyes.

Having said this, my former insurance agent considered me a smoker. According to him (and I assume the company as a whole) ANY tobacco use at all in the last year qualifies one as a smoker, even if it was 1 cigar over a week long fishing trip in July. That's why they are my FORMER insurance company.

That's my two pennies...

Agreed. I woulda dropped them like a bad habit! :D :whistling: No pun intended. I lie to my insurance when they ask. Screw 'em!

*numbah 400* Yay!

I only smoke cigars, but i do have the opinion that smoking is smoking so, even though i only smoke 2-4 cigars a week i think of me as a smoker. Of course not the same as a cigarrette smoker but smoker still.

Both!!! I been smoking for 13 years now, cigarettes mostly ;) but now they been reducing at the expense :sign: of cigar time that seems to dominate.

Definetly an everyday smoker just trying to enjoy his rights

Good question BTW!

Jeremy, I smoke both cigars and cigarettes.

I do not, however buy or smoke commercially made cigarettes. I buy quality imported tobacco, and roll my own.
There is a difference. As there is a difference in cigars.

I can't stand the dry, chemically laden, filtered excuses for cigarettes that are sold as such.

Would that I didn't smoke the 'ette' of cigar, but addiction is just that. I'm addicted to tobacco. Have been for years. Tobacco addiction is harder to break than heroin addiction, (so I've heard) but I can't say from personal experience, as I abhor and detest white powders, and will never partake of them in any form, and never have.

I'll just do my tobacco and beer, thank you very much. An occasional taste of distilled liquor is ok, but I don't partake of it on a regular basis by any means. I never drink wine, unless it's offered by a host or hostess. Just not my thing.

I've been smoking cigarettes for more than 30 years, and cigars for 13+ years.

"Find a vice you like, and let it kill you."

It's better than an adversary, every time.

I only smoke cigars, but it doesn't really matter because US society seems to look down on cigar smoking, at least in public. The laws that will eventually be passed here will affect cigarette and cigar smokers alike. Stupid damn people trying to save everybody.
