So… We’re Allowed to Want to Buy Cigars, Just Not Good Ones?

"You must be a contributing member in good standing for the previous four months to post a sale in these forums. "Want To Buy" posts are allowed, but are at the discretion of the membership and the seller. New members asking for hard-to-find cigars is considered rude and not within the spirit of these forums. New members or inactive members may be asked to send funds before shipping. Exceptions may be allowed. Contact Rod via PM for questions."
“So let me get this straight — new members are allowed to post ‘Want to Buy’ threads… but only if they’re asking for cigars nobody is actually looking for?
You can ask for common sticks, but if you ask for something rare, it’s considered ‘rude’?

That’s a strange rule for a cigar-trading forum.

The whole point of a buy/sell community is that people look for hard-to-find cigars. Nobody joins a forum hoping to track down mass-market smokes you can grab at any gas station or online shop. Limiting new people from asking about rare cigars defeats the purpose of a marketplace.

If the concern is protecting established members from scammers, that’s understandable — but that risk exists whether someone is asking for Partagás Shorts or a Cohiba 2014 Reserva. The value doesn’t change the principle.

A better rule would be:
judge people on their behavior, not the rarity of the cigar they ask about.

If someone is legit, respectful, and willing to send funds first (as the rules say), then why should it matter what cigar they’re looking for?

Right now the policy reads less like protection and more like gatekeeping.”

Huh? You're obviously having a hard time with comprehension today. What you don't understand, although you've been here for 11 years, is that a lot of new members come and post an ISO for cuban cigars. They hope people will sell them and they'll be on their merry way. Never reallly contributing to the forum.

We don't know their behavior, because they're NEW. Get it? You're obviously reading into the "policy" as you say. We don't want people here, who come and buy something, then leave and never become contributing members.

I get it. So only cuban cigars are "rare" cigars? Even your logic here is flawed. Who comes to a place where they can find rare cigars successfully then just bails? Does that really make sense? Nah. I think you are having a hard time with logic here.

Ok, you're right and I'm wrong. Have a good day.

This isn’t a cigar-trading forum.

I think you're reading into it too much. It applies for anything, not just hard to find cigars, or Cubans. That was just an example Rod used when writing the rules.

The four month rule has always applied with new members, and even members in good standing who have disappeared for a few years or more. In my opinion it has always been fair across the board. Even case by case basis scenarios. I've had members reach out to me in the past who have been gone for long periods asking me if I thought it would be OK for them to post a sale. When I've instructed them to reach out to Rod, I've always seen him give them his blessing to proceed.

Things have changed a lot (when that rule was written) since then/when I joined almost 20 years ago. The HTF stuff was pretty even when it came to Cuban cigars and stuff like Fuente rare releases, and other non-Cuban cigars. That's not really the case anymore, but the rules still apply more or less.

Anyway, if someone shows up in their first post is wanting to sell a box of Mac noodles, it's going to go down the same way as if he was selling some rare box of Cuban cigars. Only, I wouldn't be sending him a private message trying to work a deal in the background. 😁
