Subaru Transmission Question

So, at under 65,000, the tranny was replaced by the dealer(via extended warranty agreement).

Upon driving it we noticed a 'difference' in performance. The engine stays at around 3000 rpm while cruising at hwy speeds(higher than before. When accelerating at hwy speed, it doesn't down shift and just kind of 'builds up' speed...not immediate.
The dealer attributed this to the 'computer re-learning' the drivers style(or some such thing)....well, that was over 5,000miles ago.

Also - there is an audible 'click' when shifting to and from 'Park' - the click is in the 'DASH' and we were told it is a relay...we never heard it befor the new tranny.

Now - the old tranny went because of a $16 part the breaks in them(on occasion)....before the break - the car was smooth and peppy. The warranty company opted for a replacement rebuild (with a warranty of it's own).

My question really revolves around this 'relay' business. Does anyone with an older Subaru have this noise?

I don't Gary, but make sure it's going into overdrive. Cycle the trans in and out of overdrive manually when you are at highway speeds. 3,000 RPM's seems a little on the high side. See if they jump higher when you take it out of OD manually. Should be a switch on the shifter that does this. If the RPM does not change, then you know it's not ever shifting into OD. I would think at highway speed that your RPM should be between 2300-2600.

I can't say on the relay, but most cars have a shift interlock solenoid that makes an audible click when shifting from park, ect.


5,000 is way to long to be claiming the relearn process. This usually happens within 75 miles.

I have a 95 Legacy 4dr awd...that click has been there since day one
As far as the 3000 rpm thing, I noticed mine does that in the winter only. It seems to stay at around 3k for about 15 mins...After the 15 min marker I run about 2500 rpm @ 65-70. I attributed the higher rpm to cold and old age, since she has 165K miles on her. I have to admit that is the best car I have ever owned, especially in these lousy CT conditions. And even at that age I'm still getting over 25mpg. I am seriously thinking of getting another one when this one does finally bite the dust.
