Tattoos & Earrings

During my pursuit of the "green $$", i work three jobs, I get to go to some million dollar homes to either pressure wash (my small business) or as an employee of a pool service. I usually either have on a pool service polo shirt or a t-shirt with my business number on it. OK... some times I get extremely dirty or grimey so no way I'm coming dressed in decent clothes
Today I had to reach down into some icky water to pull freeze plugs out of the water returns and took off my polo to keep from getting wet to my armpits. My shirt underneath was sleeveless. I have tattoos on both upper arms and a maid came out and started giving me a bunch of crap about professionalism and appearance at "her" house. Was told how her boss wouldn't accept my disregard for the household. Tattoos and earrings were her main concern.
I gave a short reply ,"I'm cleaning the pool, not f---ing his wife"....dead silence followed and I got done in peace

Anybody offended by tattoos and earrings ? ? ? even if I do a great job for way less than other companies ?

Tattoos and earings if done tastefully are no problem. One has to be aware if he is in the business world sometimes he must be discreet if he expects to be successful. I really don't think a maid can make judgements about what her boss would think. Every business situation is different and you are the the one that must make the call on what might be proper for that client. Where I work if one has a tattoo it must remain covered during the shift. I personally don't care if someone I might hire to do a job has a tattoo, green skin, long hair, male or female as long as the job is done properly.

2. Every business situation is different and you are the the one that must make the call on what might be proper for that client.

1. Some "maids" are actually given the authority by home owners and are in charge of the household and its affairs. He did say that he visits high valued homes where we might expect to encounter this situation more often.

2. I am not offended by tattoos (especially the one on my leg or the one on my back ) but it is often the client that should make the call, not the business owner/service provider. The home owner (or their agent) has every right to have me/not have me in their home because of my appearance. If they think I'm unprofessional / unworthy, then I'd hope they would ask me to leave in this case, because I'd rather work for someone that can appreciate my service more than their own opinion of my appearance.

Tattoos & earrings nope not offended..these items are not a reflection of a persons ability to perform thier chosen profession. The homeowner or designated agent does have the right to choose another vendor/supplier based on any number of concerns.

If the homeowner was not home then who cares...maybe the maid was not being truthful and she was concerned based on your appearance.

First of all, that is an all-time classic great response. I love it!

But yes, some people are offended by earrings and tattoos. It's up to you to decide whether you give a damn or not.

I do not have a tattoo, but I do have an earring.

I have removed the earring more than once to look more professional for a situation. Tatoos are a little harder to remove

I think your reply is Classic, Awesome. I just hope for your sake, that it doesn't come back to haunt you. You know, the Maid tells the Master, the Master calls the Boss and the Boss has to deal with you, not fun.

Of course, your Boss just might tell the Master "Well, is he f---ing ya wife, if not then why do you care?"

Someday I'll post a picture of my entire back. That'll pretty much sum up how I feel about tattoos That said, there isn't a person in my office who knows about it...and I plan to keep it that way.

Regarding earrings, it pisses me off to no end when people give guys w/ earrings a hard time. I once had a college job where a guy wouldn't let me wear my earrings (don't have em' anymore). I said "Hey, it's OK for the girls to where them though, right?" He says "yes, they're girls." I told him I quit right there on the spot.

Simply ridiculous and sexist.

I'm a Jarhead and old school so take that into account. Except for changing I've never seen a situation when you had to take off your shirt. If your job has that possibility then you could be prepared. At least at that house anyway. As for earrings on men, when I grew up the only ones that had them were Pirates, Foreigners and Faggots and that's the way it was. I know things change but not too much in the closed world of the Corps so they still make me uncomfortable. Guess who I hire if I have 2 otherwise equal candidates?

the house owner prob. has a 'no visible tattoo' policy at his house and so the maid might just be following orders.

I do not mind it. If I were the boss of a company, I might say just one or two earrings and keep them tasteful and/or yes to tattoos, just do not show us them at work.

Agree with AVB on the job interview point. Two equal candidates... the one that _showed_ the tattoos in the interview loses. For me, the reason isn't that I'm picking the guy without tattoos, but that I'm picking the guy who knew enough to cover up his tats in an interview scenario. Key part of the job interview is seeing if the person understands the concept of time and place.

My opinion on the whole thing? Your response has high potential to lose business, and most small business owners can't afford that. Whether the bared tattoos and discarded shirt were professional or not isn't really an important question. She was unprofessional to berate you, your response - though incredibly funny - was completely unprofessional, and if your boss is a professional and it gets back to him - he should probably fire your ass. And the irony? - You didn't even get to bang the customer's wife...

Take your grain of salt with this - as I have been fired more than a couple times for things quite similar, including times I has less reason to respond aggressively. I wouldn't change a thing about my behavior... gotta be yourself - but you also gotta pay for it sometimes...

I understand what your saying but I disagree and agree! About the two people coming in for a job interview,one has his tats covered and one dont. I think In this world people are juged the wrong way, why cover them up? If your happy and proud of them why hide them? What if the guy that has tats is way more skilled than the guy without the tats? What do you do than?
Me myself I look at it in a couple diffrent ways,you want to look the best you can for your former boss.He might not give a **** about tattoos but than again he might! So what do you do,you cover them up! I have done it many times myself,but I wish I didnt have to... Well than i guess you dont have to but your taking a chance if you dont!

I just wish people didnt look at other's that have tattoos and earings the wrong way,Iam not saying all people but we all get it a lot!

I have a uncle that has over 100 tat's and is a CEO of a huge multi million dollor company.Dont juge a book by its cover!!!

Once I buy my new camera Ill post pics of my own tat's and earings...

If I'm interviewing people - I hire the best candidate. If the job isn't client-facing - I don't even consider parameters like this relevent (you should see my sys admins... damnable hippies all... )

You deal with customers/clients - then I take it into account. A professional demeanor and personality is far more important... I was just commenting on the hypothetical scenario of "2 otherwise equal candidates"...

Heheh... I know of a few CEO's with lots of tattoos or similar fashion/style/life-style choices. It's good to be the king...
